Sony’s overall results for the quarter
Sony’s continuing-operations sales reached ¥2,621.6 billion, up 2% from the same quarter a year earlier. Operating income rose 36% to ¥340.0 billion, while net income attributable to Sony Group stockholders increased 23% to ¥259.0 billion. Sony described sales and operating income as first-quarter records in its Q1 FY2025 financial presentation.
The roughly US$17.8 billion headline conversion should not be confused with a separately reported dollar revenue figure. Sony’s presentation gives the quarter’s average exchange rate as ¥144.6 per US dollar; the reported sales amount is in yen and covers continuing operations.
Game & Network Services was a major growth contributor
Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment recorded sales of ¥936.5 billion, up 8% year over year, and operating income of ¥148.0 billion, up 127%. These are segment results, not Sony’s total company revenue or income.

Sony attributed the segment’s sales increase primarily to third-party game software, including add-on content, and network services. Foreign exchange weighed on sales, according to the company’s results presentation.
How many PS5 consoles did Sony sell?
Sony sold 2.5 million PS5 consoles during the quarter, bringing cumulative PS5 sales to 80.3 million, according to Thurrott’s August 7, 2025 report. The quarterly and cumulative figures measure console sales; they are distinct from PlayStation account activity.

PlayStation activity and longer-term growth
Sony reported 123 million monthly active accounts (MAUs) on PlayStation in June 2025, up 6% year over year. Sony defines MAUs as an estimated count of unique accounts that played games or used services on PlayStation Network during the last month of the quarter. The estimate is based on company research and may be updated.
In its presentation, Sony compared June 2025’s 123 million MAUs with 93 million in June 2018, a 32% increase at a comparable point after PS4’s launch. The company also forecast that FY2025 content and service revenue would be approximately 50% above FY2018 on a US-dollar basis. That was a forecast made in August 2025, not a confirmed result for FY2025.

What Sony said about spending and future growth
Sony’s management presentation said, “This indicates that in addition to the increase in the number of users, an increase in spending per user is contributing to revenue growth.” It also said, “We expect content and service revenue to continue to grow steadily from next fiscal year onwards as well, thanks to the user community we have cultivated to date.” The latter is Sony’s expectation, not a guarantee or a report of realized future revenue.
