What is happening on the PlayStation Store?
Several outlets have reported removals of games associated with publishers described as selling low-effort or “shovelware” titles. The coverage points to repeated actions, rather than a single publicly announced campaign. In early 2025, reports disagreed over whether a broad cleanup had begun; later stories described larger batches of listings disappearing in 2026.

“eSlop” is a community and media label, not a category Sony has publicly defined in the sources reviewed. The reports discuss issues such as low-effort simulator games, allegedly AI-generated artwork and misleading gameplay claims, but they do not establish that any one of those characteristics was Sony’s reason for removing a particular title.

Why the reported counts do not add up to a total
The numbers describe different publishers, dates and units. Play3 explicitly clarified that its 1,194 ThiGames figure was a count of PS4 and PS5 listing editions, including localized and alternate releases, and corresponded to about 150 distinct games. IGN’s later “more than 700” figure was a report-level estimate of removed low-quality game listings, not a Sony-published count.

Those figures should not be combined into a grand total: the reports may cover different periods, editions or overlapping removals. The reviewed sources contain no primary Sony tally of unique games removed across publishers.
Has Sony announced an anti-eSlop policy?
Not in the official Sony materials reviewed. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s January 14, 2026 statement with Nintendo and Microsoft sets out shared player-safety principles, including removing content unsuitable for services and enforcing rules against misconduct. It does not announce a crackdown on low-quality game listings or explain the reported publisher removals. Sony’s shared-safety statement.

Sony’s August 14, 2025 overview of PlayStation Store features describes curated collections, demos, filters, ratings and accessibility tags as discovery tools. It does not set out delisting criteria for low-effort games. Sony’s Store overview.
The available public material therefore does not establish why any particular publisher or title was removed, whether removals followed quality review, contractual or account issues, policy violations or publisher choice, or whether Sony has adopted a new formal quality threshold.

What platform certification does—and does not—tell players
In the February 2025 coverage, Push Square relayed an IGN quote from an unnamed developer describing certification as a check that a game’s code complies with hardware specifications, rather than a substitute for developer-led quality assurance. That is the developer’s characterization, not Sony’s own wording. It helps explain why a game appearing in a store should not be read as an endorsement of its originality or overall quality; it does not explain any later delisting.
For players, the practical distinction is between a game passing platform requirements and Sony publicly promising that every listing meets a particular creative or production-quality bar. The sources reviewed do not show Sony publishing such a bar for the games in this controversy.

What players can reasonably conclude
- Multiple outlets reported removals from the PlayStation Store over 2025 and 2026, but early reports differed over whether the activity amounted to a broad action.
- Edition counts can substantially exceed unique-game counts, as the ThiGames reporting illustrates.
- The reported 700-plus and 80–90 figures are press estimates, not official Sony statistics.
- Sony’s public player-safety statement and Store-discovery overview do not explain the delistings.
- The available reporting does not support treating AI-generated art, by itself, as a confirmed Sony removal trigger.
