Update: Black Myth: Wukong is now available on Xbox Series X|S; the Xbox Store lists its release date as August 20, 2025. The unresolved question is why the Xbox version arrived a year after the PC and PS5 launch.
There is no publicly confirmed Sony–Game Science exclusivity deal. Game Science said its Xbox version needed more optimization, while an August 2024 Forbes report cited an unnamed source who said an exclusivity agreement caused the delay. Microsoft declined to comment on partners’ deals with other platform holders, which neither confirms nor disproves that report.

What is confirmed about the Xbox release?
Game Science’s official FAQ said PC and PS5 players could play the full game beginning August 20, 2024, while the Xbox Series X|S version would come later. The developer’s stated explanation was: “We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards.” It apologized for the delay and said it would announce an Xbox date once the version met those standards. Game Science’s FAQ
The wait is over: Xbox’s official store listing gives August 20, 2025 as the Xbox Series X|S release date. The discrepancy between that date and the 2024 PC and PS5 launch is what prompted questions about the reason for the delay.

Where did the exclusivity claim come from?
On August 29, 2024, Forbes Senior Contributor Paul Tassi reported that an unnamed source with specific knowledge of the situation attributed the delay to an exclusivity deal rather than a technical issue. Tassi acknowledged that this claim conflicted with Game Science’s public explanation and said he did not know the agreement’s duration. The report did not identify the source or publish a contract. Forbes’ report
That is a reported allegation, not a confirmed deal. The available statements do not establish whether an agreement existed, who its parties were, or what its terms might have been.

What did Microsoft say?
On June 21, 2024, Microsoft told Windows Central: “We can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders.” The spokesperson also said Microsoft was working with Game Science to bring the game to Xbox. Windows Central’s report
Microsoft’s wording was not confirmation that a Sony deal existed. It left the question open, just as Game Science’s public statement gave its own stated reason without resolving the anonymous-source claim.

How to weigh the competing explanations
| Source | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Game Science’s official FAQ | The developer publicly said the Xbox version needed further optimization to meet its standards and would launch later than PC and PS5. | It does not independently settle the exclusivity allegation or disclose any deal terms. |
| Microsoft’s statement, quoted by Windows Central | Microsoft said it was working with Game Science and could not comment on partners’ deals with other platform holders. | It does not confirm that an agreement existed or identify its parties. |
| Forbes’ August 2024 report | Paul Tassi attributed the exclusivity explanation to an unnamed source with specific knowledge. | The report does not name the source, provide the agreement, or state its duration; the allegation conflicts with Game Science’s public explanation. |
| Xbox Store listing | The store lists Black Myth: Wukong for Xbox Series X|S with an August 20, 2025 release date. | The listing establishes the release date, not why Xbox players waited. |
Why was the Xbox version delayed?
The cited public record does not resolve the full cause. Game Science gave optimization as its public reason; Forbes later reported a conflicting explanation based on an unnamed source; Microsoft declined to comment on partners’ deals. Without a disclosed agreement or a named-party confirmation, the exclusivity claim remains unverified, not disproved.

Game Science also said logistical limitations affected its ability to sell physical discs at the same time as the official release. That statement concerns simultaneous distribution at launch; it does not establish whether a physical edition is available now. The Xbox Store listing is a digital storefront listing and does not answer that separate question. Game Science’s FAQ
