GamesBeat rendered that total as $7.01 billion and reported a 12% year-over-year increase. The figure covers Sony’s entire G&NS segment—not PlayStation Network or subscription revenue alone.
What Sony reported for the quarter
The quarter was Sony’s fiscal second quarter of FY2024, which the company’s supplemental document labels FY25.2Q. The fiscal-year label can look ahead of the calendar year: this quarter ended September 30, 2024.
| Measure | Q2 result | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| G&NS segment sales | ¥1,071.530 billion; GamesBeat reported the dollar equivalent as $7.01 billion and year-over-year growth of 12% | Total sales across the Game & Network Services segment, not Network Services alone. Sony’s FY25.2Q supplemental information; GamesBeat, November 8, 2024. |
| G&NS operating income | ¥138.8 billion | GamesBeat reported this as 2.8 times the year-earlier result. GamesBeat, November 8, 2024. |
| PS5 hardware | 3.8 million units | Hardware unit sales, down from 4.9 million in the year-earlier quarter. Sony’s FY25.2Q supplemental information; GamesBeat, November 8, 2024. |
| Full-game software | 77.7 million units | Combined PS4 and PS5 full-game units; first-party titles accounted for 5.3 million. Sony’s FY25.2Q supplemental information. |
| Full-game digital-download ratio | 70% | Share of PS4 and PS5 full-game units sold that were digital downloads. Sony’s FY25.2Q supplemental information. |
| PlayStation Network monthly active users | 116 million | Sony’s estimate of unique accounts that played games or used services on PSN during the quarter’s final month. Sony’s FY25.2Q supplemental information. |
Why did G&NS sales rise?
GamesBeat’s account of Sony’s results points to higher third-party game software sales, favorable foreign-exchange effects and increased network-service sales as contributors to the year-over-year sales increase. Lower hardware sales offset part of that growth. These are multiple reported factors; the figures do not establish that one game or service was responsible for the segment’s overall increase.
GamesBeat also attributed the higher operating income to better hardware profitability, increased third-party software sales and higher network-service sales. The segment’s improved income therefore coincided with lower PS5 unit sales; unit volume alone does not describe hardware profitability.

What the $7.01 billion includes—and what it does not
Sony reports G&NS as a segment with several revenue categories, including hardware, game software, network services and other items. Its supplemental disclosure defines Network Services as revenue recognized through PlayStation Network from PlayStation Plus and advertising, excluding Game Software revenue. The $7.01 billion figure is the whole segment’s sales total, not the amount Sony earned from PlayStation Plus, subscriptions or network services by themselves.
How to read the gaming and engagement figures
Hardware and software measure different things
Sony sold 3.8 million PS5 consoles in the quarter, compared with 4.9 million a year earlier. Meanwhile, PS4 and PS5 full-game software sales totaled 77.7 million units, including 5.3 million first-party units. Those are unit counts, not revenue figures; they do not show how much each category contributed to segment sales.

Digital share and PSN activity add context
Digital downloads represented 70% of PS4 and PS5 full-game units sold. Sony also estimated 116 million PSN monthly active users at quarter end, using unique accounts that played games or used PSN services during the final month of the quarter. Sony says this estimate is based on its research and may be updated, so it is a company-defined activity measure rather than a count of people or paying subscribers.
One title’s sales are not proof of the segment’s growth driver
Sony reported that ASTRO BOT had reached 1.5 million cumulative sell-through units as of November 3, 2024. That title-specific figure provides a snapshot of a game’s sales after the quarter ended; it does not establish that ASTRO BOT drove the aggregate G&NS sales increase.
