Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo create a mezzanine in The Sims 4, build the upper level around an open section so the room below remains visible. Use a platform when you want a raised intermediate surface or custom height, then connect surfaces at different heights with the appropriate step, stairs, or ladder.
Plan the opening and upper level
A mezzanine is an intermediate area that looks down into a larger space below. The open view comes from the upper-floor layout: the floor surrounds an opening rather than covering the entire area above the lower room.
- Open Build Mode and decide where the mezzanine will sit and how large the opening should be.
- Build the upper-level floor around the planned opening, leaving the area above the lower room clear.
- Check the view from both levels. Adjust the opening or surrounding floor until the lower room is visible from the mezzanine.
Add a platform if you need a raised surface
Platforms are useful for a raised intermediate surface or a custom height; they are not required just to create the open view. In Build Mode, find platforms in Walls and Empty Rooms. Select the room or platform and use the up and down controls to change its height, as described in Electronic Arts’ November 10, 2020 update notes.
Connect surfaces and levels
Choose the connection based on the height difference. Electronic Arts’ November 10, 2020 update notes say Sims can step onto a platform when it is a single step higher or lower than the adjacent floor. Greater height differences need stairs or a ladder. Platforms also cannot connect separate building floors, so use stairs or a ladder to travel between levels.

- Create Vampires

The EA multilevel FAQ says stairs need a room above to connect to and mentions a second-floor permit in the feature it documents. Its date and applicability to every current edition or build workflow are not established, so treat that permit wording as specific to the FAQ’s documented feature rather than a universal current requirement. See EA’s multilevel FAQ.
Finish the exposed edge and test the route
Use platform trim, half walls, or wall material to finish the exposed edge. Platform trims are available in Walls and Empty Rooms; half walls provide another edge treatment, according to EA’s November 10, 2020 update notes.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
- From the upper level, confirm the opening still gives a clear view into the room below.
- From the lower level, check that the mezzanine edge and any half wall look as intended.
- Test the stair or ladder route and make sure it reaches a usable landing and upper destination. EA’s multilevel FAQ notes that stairs need a room above to connect to.
These instructions synthesize EA’s documented platform and multilevel mechanics; EA does not present them as a tested recipe for a specific mezzanine build. The cited guidance does not establish compatibility across every game version, platform, or installation. If a control or connection behaves differently, check the current in-game interface and test the layout in your installation.
