No, according to VGChartz’s worldwide calendar-year estimates. It estimated 21.64 million PS5 units sold to consumers in 2023, compared with 23.40 million combined for Nintendo Switch and the Xbox Series X|S family. The combined total was 1.76 million higher. These are estimates, not audited totals.
Worldwide calendar-year 2023 estimates
VGChartz’s comparison covers January through December 2023 and estimates consumer sell-through—the units sold to consumers—rather than manufacturer shipments.
| Console family | Estimated 2023 consumer sales |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 21.64 million |
| Nintendo Switch | 15.90 million |
| Xbox Series X|S | 7.50 million |
| Switch and Xbox Series X|S combined | 23.40 million |
On that basis, Switch and Xbox Series X|S together exceeded PS5 by 1.76 million estimated units. The Xbox figure is for the Series X|S family, not Series X alone. VGChartz published the yearly estimates in February 2024; see its December 2023 worldwide hardware estimates and 2023 worldwide comparison.
How to interpret the comparison
VGChartz says it builds estimates from retail samples and country-level trends extrapolated to wider regions, and that its method typically produces figures within 10% of actual totals. It may adjust historical estimates using manufacturer and regional tracker data. The figures therefore provide a third-party estimate, not an audited, jointly reported count from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

Sales basis matters: consumer sell-through counts units purchased by consumers, while manufacturer sell-in counts units shipped into the supply chain. Those figures can differ. VGChartz explains its approach and the distinction in its methodology notes.
Why Sony’s official figures are different
Sony’s official sales page reports 20.8 million PS5 hardware units for FY2023, the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. Sony labels that series “Sell-in”; its fiscal year runs April through March, and the footnote says the series includes returned and refurbished products. That makes it a different period and sales measure from VGChartz’s worldwide calendar-year consumer-sales estimate. The numbers should not be subtracted from or treated as a direct check on one another. See Sony’s Business Data & Sales page.

What the 50-million PS5 milestone means
On December 20, 2023, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that PS5 had passed 50 million units sold through to consumers as of December 9, 2023. This was a cumulative lifetime milestone, not PS5 sales during calendar year 2023. Sony’s announcement also quoted then-President and CEO Jim Ryan: “Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners.” Read the December 20 announcement.
