Sony’s headline figures describe potential gains, not guaranteed improvements in every game; the benefits depend on whether a title has been enhanced for the console.
What is different about the PS5 Pro?
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, positioning it as a more capable version of the PS5 for games that use its additional graphics hardware. Sony said its GPU has 67% more compute units than the PS5 model current at the time, and that its memory is 28% faster. Sony said the combination enables up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. These are Sony’s launch comparisons, not independent benchmark results or a promise that all games run 45% faster. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement

In practical terms, the extra capacity gives developers more room to pursue higher image quality, smoother performance, or a balance of the two. The result is title-specific: enhanced features are available only in games designed or updated for PS5 Pro, and the options differ from game to game. Sony also says Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games, but that does not mean every older game gets a Pro-specific upgrade.
What does the PS5 Pro’s ray tracing upgrade do?
Ray tracing simulates how light interacts with surfaces to create effects such as reflections and refraction. Sony said the PS5 Pro can cast rays at double—and in some cases triple—the speed of the PS5 model current when the Pro was announced. That is Sony’s comparative hardware claim; the visible effect depends on how a game uses ray tracing and what its developers enable.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Sony’s lead architect Mark Cerny later pointed to a technical presentation covering advanced ray tracing, the distinction between FLOPS and TOPS, and the machine-learning hardware used for PSSR. His December 18, 2024 announcement also described a deeper Sony-AMD collaboration focused on machine learning for graphics and gameplay; it does not supply independent game benchmarks. What is PSSR, and what changed in 2026?
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning-based image upscaling technology. It analyzes a game image and reconstructs it at a higher effective resolution, adding detail as it scales the image. The aim is to deliver a sharper-looking result without requiring the console to render every pixel at the final output resolution.
On February 27, 2026, Sony announced an updated PSSR version with a changed neural network and algorithm. Sony named Resident Evil Requiem the first title to use the updated technology and said that more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR to boost effective resolution by that date. Sony also announced a system update that would add an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting for games already supporting PSSR. Those are Sony’s statements about the update and rollout in February 2026, not confirmation that every PS5 Pro game uses the newer version or that the setting is available in every title. Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. The PS5 Pro is a disc-less console, so physical game discs and movie discs require the optional PS5 Disc Drive, sold separately. Sony says the drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. Check compatibility for a particular PS4 disc before buying. Is the PS5 Pro worth it?
The Pro is most relevant to players who want the graphics or performance options offered by supported PS5 Pro-enhanced games and have a display suited to seeing those differences. The extra hardware alone does not guarantee a visible improvement in a particular game: check that game’s specific Pro enhancements and available modes. If a title has no Pro-specific support, Game Boost may help supported PS4 and PS5 games, but Sony does not promise a uniform result across the library.
For a buying decision, weigh those game-by-game benefits against the regional price and the cost of a separate Disc Drive if you need one. Sony’s cited announcements establish the hardware claims and supported features, but do not establish independent performance measurements across games.
