Dimensions was an experimental mobile game from RJDJ that made environmental sound part of how players moved through its game world. In a 2011 GamesBeat interview, RJDJ co-founder Michael Breidenbruecker described a design that combined sound and location cues while aiming to make play fit into everyday life, rather than demand constant attention to a screen.
How Dimensions used sound
GamesBeat described Dimensions as a game in which environmental sound helped determine when players moved between different “dimensions.” The sound around a player was not simply a soundtrack: it was part of the context shaping the sonic experience.
The interview presents this as an attempt to connect game activity with what players were doing in real life. Breidenbruecker said the team wanted a game that could be played without requiring someone to keep watching and tapping a touchscreen.
How location fit into the game
Sound was not the only contextual cue in the account. GamesBeat also described a GPS and Google Maps component. Players sought glowing “Quantum Cells,” which the article characterized as a kind of currency. They could use them to power a beam for collecting artifacts and repelling enemies.

Those details are the mechanics reported in the interview; it does not provide a fuller account of the rules or establish additional features.
Breidenbruecker’s ambition for the idea
The interview situated Dimensions among experiments in games linked to real-world activity, and said RJDJ had taken inspiration from titles including Shadow Cities and Epic Win. Breidenbruecker described the emerging idea of context-aware games as a new genre: “When we started to talk about that, and we read what Will Wright is up to at the moment, we realized that the whole genre is starting to happen here, which was super interesting and new.”

He also acknowledged the uncertainty of being early to a concept: “This has never been done before,” said Breidenbruecker. “Usually it’s never the first one that makes it happen, but it’s too good of an idea not to do it!”
Context-aware services beyond the game
Breidenbruecker used the interview to discuss a broader possibility: that a phone’s ongoing connection to its owner could support services informed by context. He said, “Your phone is always with you – there’s lots of talk recently about carrier IQ – in the end, we can actually create so many more services out of the personal connection between phone and human.”

He also argued that how data is used matters: “it’s more about what you do with the data. Last.fm is, ultimately, spyware. Collect the data openly and honestly – neighbor radio, personal charts, etc. It’s about “context” data.” These are Breidenbruecker’s views as expressed in the interview, not evidence that any proposed service was subsequently launched.

GamesBeat published the interview on December 11, 2011; its page says it was updated June 18, 2025. That update date does not establish that the game itself was updated or remains available. The interview does not verify whether Dimensions can still be downloaded, supported, or played on current phones, so it should be read as a historical account rather than a present-day app guide.
