Its imaginative setting, character writing and flexible daily routine give it a distinct cozy-game appeal, but a confusing tutorial, fiddly menus and repetitive service work can make it less relaxing than its premise suggests. Nintendo Life’s 2023 Switch review scored it 7/10.
What kind of game is Spirittea?
Developed by Cheesemaster Games and published by No More Robots, Spirittea starts when the player drinks tea that lets them see spirits. From there, the game combines town exploration and character quests with the work of restoring and operating a bathhouse for those spirits. Nintendo’s Switch listing and Xbox’s product page describe that central premise and its activities: Nintendo Switch listing and Xbox listing.

Finding spirits and building relationships
You investigate disturbances around town, learn what is troubling a spirit, and help it remember who it is. Befriending townspeople and exploring the mountain sit alongside those spirit quests, giving you reasons to leave the bathhouse rather than treating the game as a management sim alone.
Running the bathhouse
When spirits visit, service involves practical chores: clean rooms and towels, chop wood to heat the water, prepare food or elixirs, and scrub guests. You also need to seat compatible spirits together and keep rivals apart. Bathhouse earnings fund upgrades and expansion. Nintendo’s listing also highlights side activities such as bug catching and karaoke, plus shops where you can buy furniture and upgrades.

#1 Best Overall
- Keep the bathhouse and towels clean - Grab your trusty broom to sweep away the cobwebs and collect up all your towels
- Deliver a five-star service with food and scrubbing - Get ready to pamper your spirits with food straight from your kitchen
- Make the water perfect for each spirit - Chop wood for the boilers to heat up the water to the perfect temperature and mix up various elixirs
- Sit friends together and enemies apart - Every spirit has others they like best, as well as some they don't enjoy spending time with
- You'll have to plan carefully when you lead spirits to their baths - don't seat just anyone together
What the reviews praise
Nintendo Life reviewer Michelle See-Tho gave the Switch version 7/10 in 2023 in its Spirittea review. The review’s strongest case for the game is its combination of a calming routine with a stranger, more personal world: character writing and distinctive spirit designs help give the chores a reason to matter.
The game also leaves room to choose what to focus on. You can spend time pursuing spirit problems, getting to know the town, exploring, or improving the bathhouse. That freedom suits players who enjoy setting their own short-term goals in a life sim rather than following a tightly directed sequence.

What may frustrate you
The Switch review identifies several obstacles to settling into the routine. The initial bathhouse tutorial is wordy and confusing, menus and controls can feel fiddly, and some minigames are more complicated than they need to be. Once the main service loop is familiar, its repeated tasks can also begin to feel repetitive.
See-Tho also reported a few glitches in the Switch sessions she reviewed, including a clock that stopped or a character that became stuck; restarting fixed those issues. She noted stuttering around the one-year mark, dark scenes in the early morning and at night, and small text in some handheld menus. These are observations from that review’s version and sessions, not proof of a problem on every platform or in the current build.

A May 29, 2025 publisher announcement summarized additions made after launch. It lists bathhouse ducks and a new vendor in the Specquackular update; a hint system in Helping Hands; a fishing overhaul in Hook, Line & Spirit; and Phantom Friends content that includes quests, spirits, spirit pets and a spirit merchant. A separate publisher post said Phantom Friends was live on Switch and Xbox on February 19, 2025. These dated announcements establish what the publisher reported by those dates, not the present version number or whether every platform has identical content. See the publisher announcements for those update details.
Platforms, editions and what to check
The game launched on November 13, 2023, according to Xbox’s official listing. The documented platforms include Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; Xbox also lists Xbox Cloud Gaming and handheld support. Nintendo Life’s Switch listing gives historical launch prices of $19.99 in North America and £17.99 in the UK/Europe, but those are launch-era figures, not current prices. The publisher’s May 2025 announcement also said a physical Switch edition had launched. That confirms the edition existed by that date, but not current stock or retailer availability. Listings alone do not establish feature or performance parity between platforms, so don’t assume the Switch review’s performance observations apply to PC or Xbox—or that another platform has no issues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Spirittea worth playing?
Spirittea is a good fit if the idea of investigating spirit troubles and then tending to a supernatural bathhouse sounds more appealing than a conventional farming or crafting routine. Its characters, spirit designs and mix of optional activities give its cozy premise personality. It is a weaker fit if you want a smooth onboarding experience, streamlined controls, or a loop that constantly changes: the review’s clearest cautions are the tutorial, interface friction, minigames and repetition.
