Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player action RPG led by Casey Hudson, director of the original Knights of the Old Republic. It is described as a spiritual successor—not a direct sequel or continuation—and will tell a new story with new characters. The game was announced for PC and consoles, but it has no official release date or named console platforms.

What was announced?

Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games revealed Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic with a teaser trailer at The Game Awards 2025. Arcanaut describes it as a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG in which players take the role of a Force user travelling through a galaxy “on the edge of rebirth.” The official Arcanaut Studios announcement and Lucasfilm Games catalog also describe a journey shaped by choices that can deepen the character’s path toward light or darkness.

The setting is the end of the Old Republic, but the story is not presented as a continuation of a previous protagonist’s arc. In a December 12, 2025 StarWars.com interview, Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly said the game will introduce new characters for an all-new story.

Is Fate of the Old Republic a KOTOR sequel?

No. Lucasfilm Games says it is not a direct sequel or continuation of Knights of the Old Republic. Reilly said it is being built by people who helped shape that legacy, with the ambition of a deep, cinematic, choice-driven role-playing game. Casey Hudson likewise described the project as an all-new story intended to preserve the player agency and immersion that were central to KOTOR.

Star Wars: Heritage Pack - Nintendo Switch
  • The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
  • STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
  • STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
  • STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
  • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)

“Spiritual successor” signals an intended connection in approach and legacy, not confirmation of a shared protagonist or a continuation of Revan’s story. The original Knights of the Old Republic game page remains a useful reference for the predecessor; it is a separate, existing game, not Fate of the Old Republic.

Who is making the game?

Casey Hudson is leading the project as game director and heads Arcanaut Studios. He directed the original Knights of the Old Republic and, according to Arcanaut’s announcement, the Mass Effect trilogy. Arcanaut says it was founded in July 2025 and is based in Canada, with headquarters in Edmonton and an additional office in Kelowna. Lucasfilm Games is collaborating on the project.

  • This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

What platforms will it be on, and when will it come out?

Arcanaut’s announcement says the game is in early development for PC and consoles. It does not identify particular console models, so platforms such as PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S should not be treated as confirmed. The announcement also gives no release date, preorder date, price, or edition details.

There is one broad public comment on timing, but it is not a launch window. In a December 15, 2025 GameSpot report, Hudson responded to rumors that the game would not arrive until 2030 by saying, “Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!” That is his stated expectation as reported at the time, not a firm date or a detailed schedule.
