On April 27, 2024, LEVEL UP reported that game director Hyung-Tae Kim described version 1.0.0.2 as the final costume design and said internal discussion about the issue was ongoing. The outlet quoted him: “Understandably, we also recognize this issue. However, the final costume that we wanted to show you is indeed the costume in version 1.0.0.2. I want to clarify that is our final product. However, I know this answer is not enough to convince our users. There is an internal discussion ongoing regarding this, so I think we’ll have a chance to answer it soon,” the developer stated. LEVEL UP’s April 27 report
On May 15, 2024, The Shortcut reported that SHIFT UP CEO Kim Hyeong-Tae characterized the changes as a quality decision: “I don’t think that just because the costumes are vulgar doesn’t necessarily mean they’re good, so this is something that was modified for quality. As a result, there are parts where eroticism is lessened or emphasized. This is the final product that we want to show as the intended result.” The Shortcut’s report also said unpatched physical versions showed earlier outfit designs. That account has not been independently confirmed here, and it does not establish why the edits were made.

Did Stellar Blade censor its outfits?
“Censorship” was the critics’ description of the changes, particularly because players compared the patched designs with earlier promotional material. SHIFT UP’s stated position was that the patched costumes were its intended final designs, modified for quality. Those are competing interpretations of the same changes; the available reporting does not establish that Sony ordered them.
Did players get refunds for Stellar Blade?
LEVEL UP reported on May 26, 2024, that some fans refunded their copies in protest. The report supplied no verified count or refund rate, and it did not establish that Sony generally offered refunds because of the outfit changes. LEVEL UP reported that update 1.003 added alternate versions of the outfits, obtainable in-game without microtransactions by collecting resources and purchasing or crafting them. There are three versions to keep distinct: the earlier designs shown before the day-one patch; the release-day patched designs SHIFT UP described as its intended final product; and the later alternate designs reported as obtainable in-game. The Shortcut’s report about earlier designs refers to unpatched physical copies, but buying a disc alone does not guarantee a particular outfit state: region, edition, updates, and installation choices can matter, and those details have not been verified.
