If Starfield looks washed out or its lighting seems wrong with HDR enabled, check the HDR setup for your platform first, then adjust the game’s display controls. There is no confirmed single fix for every case: the image can depend on Starfield’s settings, Windows or Xbox HDR, and the display and HDMI connection.
Start with Starfield’s display controls
Bethesda added Brightness and Contrast adjustment to Starfield’s Display Settings in Update 1.8.86, released November 20, 2023. The same update added HDR Brightness adjustment for supported systems, specifically Xbox and Windows 11. See Bethesda’s Update 1.8.86 notes.
- Open Starfield’s Options and go to Display.
- Adjust Brightness and Contrast gradually, checking the image in a scene where the problem is easy to see.
- If HDR Brightness is available on your system, adjust it as well. Its availability depends on the supported system and setup.
There is no documented universal value for these controls. Avoid copying a suggested number meant for a different display; the right result depends on the screen and viewing conditions.
Fix the HDR path on PC
For Starfield’s HDR mode on PC, Bethesda identifies Windows HDR mode as a check when the game’s UI looks too dim or too bright. Its support guidance for a dim or bright HDR UI says the issue can happen when Windows is not set to HDR display mode.

#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the HDR-capable display you use to play Starfield, especially if more than one display is connected.
- Open HDR settings for that display and enable HDR. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows HDR settings guide.
- Reopen or return to the game and check the same scene and its UI before making further brightness adjustments.
Optional: calibrate HDR in Windows 11
If the display’s overall HDR calibration is uncertain, Windows 11’s HDR Calibration app can help calibrate color and consistency. Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app instructions describe patterns for the darkest visible details, brightest visible details, and maximum brightness. Calibration is an optional display-level aid; it is not established as a repair for a Starfield rendering defect or a requirement for the game.
Check the HDR connection on Xbox
On Xbox, Bethesda recommends confirming HDR across the console, TV, and HDMI connection. Its HDR troubleshooting guidance advises checking that the console and TV have HDR enabled, that the TV’s connected HDMI port supports HDR, and that the cable supports HDR.

- Confirm HDR is enabled in the Xbox’s display settings and in the TV’s settings.
- Check that the TV input connected to the console supports HDR; some TVs support it only on particular HDMI ports.
- Confirm the HDMI cable supports HDR.
- After changing setup settings, restart the console, as Bethesda recommends.
- In Starfield, adjust the Display settings’ Brightness and Contrast, plus HDR Brightness if it is available.
Use SDR as a comparison, not a guaranteed fix
If the image still looks poor, temporarily compare Starfield with HDR turned off at the system level. This reversible check can help establish whether the problem appears only in the HDR path or also in SDR. Bethesda’s cited guidance does not prescribe SDR as a universal solution, so treat the comparison as diagnosis rather than a guaranteed remedy.

The official guidance does not establish one cause for every washed-out image report. If the steps above do not clarify the issue, note whether you are on PC or Xbox, whether system HDR is enabled, your display model, and whether other HDR games or video look similarly affected. That comparison can help distinguish a Starfield-specific symptom from a broader display or HDR-connection problem without assuming a particular hardware fault.
