Subnautica 2 entered Early Access on May 14, 2026. Unknown Worlds had delayed its planned release to 2026 after community playtests, saying it wanted more time to respond to feedback and expand the initial build. The launch came amid a separate legal dispute between the game’s developer and its parent company, Krafton; the court’s ruling and the parties’ later settlement are part of the timeline, but the available statements do not establish that the dispute caused the delay.
When did Subnautica 2 enter Early Access?
Unknown Worlds launched Subnautica 2 on May 14, 2026, at 08:00 PDT / 15:00 UTC. The developer announced a launch price of $29.99 USD, with prices localized by region. That is the announced launch price, not a guarantee of the current price in any particular storefront.
At launch, Unknown Worlds said one purchase would include additions, updates and hotfixes through the game’s 1.0 launch and beyond. The release announcement directed players to Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Xbox/Microsoft Store. Xbox Wire separately reported availability through Xbox Game Preview and on Windows PC from May 14, including access through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the relevant regional storefront for current availability and pricing.
Why was Subnautica 2 delayed?
Unknown Worlds announced that Early Access was moving to 2026 after community playtests. The studio said players responded well to the environment, creatures, story and overall direction, while their feedback also highlighted areas it wanted to improve before the public release. It said the additional development time would let the team add more biomes, vehicle upgrades, tools, story expansion and creatures.

That is the developer’s stated explanation for the delay. It does not, by itself, establish that the legal dispute with Krafton caused the schedule change.
What kind of game is it, and what can you do in Early Access?
Unknown Worlds describes Subnautica 2 as an underwater survival adventure on a new alien world. Players can explore its ecosystem and ruins, craft tools, and build custom bases. It supports solo play or optional online co-op with up to three friends.

The game is still an Early Access work in progress. On its Steam page, the developer says it expects Early Access to last roughly two to three years, based on its previous Early Access projects. That is an estimate, not a promised 1.0 date. The full release is intended to add content and polish, so buyers should expect development and changes to continue.
What happened in the Krafton–Unknown Worlds legal dispute?
The dispute arose from the acquisition agreement for Unknown Worlds and included a potential earnout. The Delaware Court of Chancery’s March 16, 2026 opinion addressed specific Phase One claims; it did not resolve every question about the earnout or damages.

The court’s Phase One findings and the later settlement describe different stages of the dispute: the ruling addressed specified contractual and operational-control claims, while the subsequent report concerned a settlement and withdrawal of pending lawsuits. Neither fact alone establishes that the legal dispute caused the Early Access delay. Yonhap also reported more than 4 million copies sold after the May launch; that figure is the agency’s report, not a current sales total.

The launch information identifies PC storefronts and Xbox/Microsoft Store, while Xbox Wire describes Xbox Game Preview and Windows PC availability. Subscription access is another route where offered; it is distinct from buying the game outright. Storefront availability and subscription catalogs can change, so confirm the current listing for your region.

Solo play is available, and co-op is optional rather than required. Xbox Wire reported that cross-platform invitations were supported, with Unknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark describing inviting friends on Xbox and other platforms through the game menu. The studio also said controller experience was a development focus. A controller is optional; the cited information does not establish that a particular model is required or was tested.
