Wonder is a true sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3 if “sequel” means a new entry carrying forward the 2D Super Mario Bros. series’ side-scrolling structure and spirit of reinvention. But Nintendo’s developer interviews do not call it a direct narrative sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3, or establish a story chronology linking the two. The distinction is between a persuasive design lineage and a confirmed canonical relationship.
What “true sequel” means for these games
A sequel can mean a continuation of a story, or simply a later game in the same series that develops its form and ideas. For Wonder, the evidence supports the second meaning: Nintendo presents it as a new side-scrolling 2D Super Mario Bros. installment for Nintendo Switch. The developer interviews do not establish that it follows Super Mario Bros. 3 in an official narrative chronology.

So the strongest defensible claim is that Wonder is a spiritual and structural successor to the classic 2D games, not that Nintendo has confirmed it as Super Mario Bros. 3’s direct story sequel.
Why Wonder feels connected to the classic 2D games
It returns to the side-scrolling series
Nintendo described Wonder as the first new 2D Mario game in about 11 years, distinguishing a new entry from intervening releases such as Super Mario Maker and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. Director Shiro Mouri said the team wanted a new foundation rather than continuing to use the New Super Mario Bros. series engine. That points to a deliberate fresh start within 2D Mario, not a claim that the game directly continues one specific older installment. (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 11, Part 1)

Surprise is a design goal, not just a callback
The developers describe an effort to make courses feel less predictable, with the Wonder Flower able to transform what is happening during a level. Mouri recalled more than 2,000 sticky notes from the team’s idea-sharing sessions; that is a count of notes, not a count of finished features. The emphasis on trying ideas and changing expectations makes Wonder feel like an evolution of 2D Mario’s course-based play rather than a simple re-creation of its predecessors. (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 11, Part 1)
It draws on more than 2D Mario
Game designer Koichi Hayashida described his role this way: “My mission in this project was to apply my experiences from the development of 3D Mario games to a 2D Mario game.” Nintendo’s interview is an English translation from Japanese. That comment helps explain why Wonder can feel both familiar in its side-scrolling foundation and unusually playful in how it changes a course. It also makes its lineage broader than Super Mario Bros. 3 alone. (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 11, Part 1)
How Wonder changes the route through a Mario game
Super Mario Bros. 3 is an obvious reference point for players thinking about classic Mario progression, but Nintendo’s interviews support a more specific comparison: Wonder gives players choices about which courses to tackle, rather than requiring a strictly sequential route through them.
In Nintendo’s description, Wonder Seeds can unlock courses. Players can earn Seeds by finishing courses or buy them in Poplin Shops with flower coins, and course difficulty indicators help players choose where to go next. The result is a progression system that lets players follow their appetite for challenge. That is a meaningful modern design choice, but it does not by itself prove that Wonder continues Super Mario Bros. 3’s story. (Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 11, Part 3)

What Nintendo has—and has not—confirmed
Nintendo’s October 2023 developer interviews are direct sources for the team’s goals and descriptions of the game’s design. They call Wonder a new 2D Mario entry and discuss its development choices, but do not call it a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3. Producer Takashi Tezuka said the team began the project “with a sense of crisis,” while the interviews describe the desire to build a fresh foundation and offer new surprises. Neither statement establishes a canonical story link. (Part 1; Part 3)
- Supported: Wonder is a new side-scrolling 2D Super Mario Bros. installment.
- Supported: The team intentionally pursued new foundations, course surprises, and flexible course progression.
- Not established by these interviews: A direct narrative sequel relationship between Wonder and Super Mario Bros. 3.
Verdict: a sequel in spirit, not a confirmed direct sequel
Calling Super Mario Bros. Wonder a “true sequel” to Super Mario Bros. 3 works as an editorial judgment about series identity: it returns to 2D side-scrolling Mario and pushes the format into new territory. It is not an official claim of direct story continuity. If “sequel” means a new, inventive continuation of classic 2D Mario, the label fits; if it means a confirmed canonical follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3, Nintendo’s interviews do not support it.
