If Terraria crashes when you start it on PC, match the fix to what happens: manually run the bundled XNA installer if Steam’s installer opens and fails, check dependencies if the error names Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll, and try configuration or file checks for a silent Steam exit. For tModLoader, use its mod-specific recovery steps. No single fix is established for every startup crash, so protect your saves and work through the relevant branch below.
First, identify which startup failure you have
Before changing files, note whether a game window appears, whether Steam continues to show Terraria as running, how long it takes to close, and the exact wording of any error. Also record your Windows version, whether you launch vanilla Terraria or tModLoader, and what changed shortly before the problem began.
- XNA installer appears, then launch stops: use the installer-specific steps below.
- Error mentions
Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll: collect a dependency diagnostic rather than treating it as a generic crash. - Steam launch closes without an error: consider a reversible configuration reset and Steam file verification.
- tModLoader fails while starting or loading mods: follow the tModLoader-specific recovery steps.
Back up your characters and worlds before changing game files. Do not delete save folders as a routine startup fix.
If Steam’s XNA installer opens but Terraria still will not start
For this specific symptom, Re-Logic Quality Assurance staff member Kazzymodus advised that “the XNA installer is not running properly” and recommended running the installer manually. In the Steam support case dated March 10, 2025, the suggested path was:
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- In Steam, open Terraria’s Manage > Browse local files menu.
- In the game’s local files, locate
xnafx40_redistand run the installer. - After it finishes, try launching Terraria again.
This is targeted guidance for the case where the XNA installer visibly opens but does not complete; it is not a universal fix for every launch failure. Read the Terraria Community Forums support case.
If the error names Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll
A missing-framework-file message needs a dependency check, not the XNA-installer or silent-exit steps by default. In a January 2025 support case, Re-Logic QA asked the player to use the provided DependencyChecker utility: drag Terraria’s executable onto the utility, then share the console output with support.

If Terraria silently exits during a Steam launch
If no installer or missing-file error appears, community support material describes two troubleshooting steps: reset Terraria’s configuration file and verify the game’s Steam files. These are reported steps, not guaranteed cures. Start with the reversible checks and keep saved worlds and characters intact.

Reset the configuration file
Close Terraria, then go to DocumentsMy GamesTerraria and reset config.json. To preserve the existing settings, move the file elsewhere or rename it rather than permanently deleting it. Launching the game can create a fresh configuration; if the reset does not help, you can restore the original file.
Verify Terraria’s Steam files
In Steam, open Terraria’s properties and use the installed-files option to verify the integrity of the game files. Steam will check the installation and reacquire files it identifies as missing or damaged. Menu wording can vary with Steam updates. Do not delete the Terraria save folders as part of this check.

enabled.jsonto reset the enabled-mod list. - If it still crashes, inspect
client.logand disable mods one at a time to isolate a possible cause.
If the crash occurs during play rather than before loading finishes, the FAQ likewise recommends examining the client log and isolating mods. Read the tModLoader usage FAQ.
What to send support if the crash continues
A useful report narrows down the failure without risking saved progress. Include:
- The exact error text, or a note that no error appears.
- Whether a window opens, whether Steam reports the game as running, and when it closes.
- Your store or launcher, Windows version, Terraria version, and whether the installation is vanilla or tModLoader.
- Any relevant diagnostic output or log, such as the DependencyChecker console output or tModLoader’s
client.log. - Recent changes, such as an update, new mod, configuration change, or installation move.
Share the information through the support channel relevant to your installation. A support case about one error or setup cannot establish the cause of another player’s crash.
Terraria’s current version context
Re-Logic announced that Terraria 1.4.5 launched on PC and other platforms on January 27, 2026, except for the bespoke China Mobile version. That announcement dates the release; it does not establish the latest PC hotfix build or current tModLoader compatibility. Check the official Terraria news for current release information before relying on a more specific build number.
