Metacritic’s top 10 games of 2023
The positions below preserve Metacritic’s displayed order. Equal scores are ties, not evidence that one title outscored another. Scores and release dates are from Metacritic’s 2023 ranking page, accessed in 2026; the ranking is across platform entries, so a score should not be treated as a universal rating for every version of a game.

What Metascore measures
Metacritic defines a Metascore as a weighted average of selected reviews from critics and publications. Its video-game review scores come from the publications themselves; user votes and comments are not part of the Metascore calculation. How Metascores are computed and Metacritic FAQ on user votes.
That makes this a critic-review ranking—not a sales chart, player-vote poll, or guarantee that every player will prefer the highest-scoring title. Genre, platform, and personal taste still matter.

How to read the ranking
- The top score is shared. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Tears of the Kingdom both have 96; the displayed order does not break that score tie.
- One entry is expansion content. Future Redeemed is a prequel scenario from the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Expansion Pass, so the headline’s shorthand “games” includes more than standalone releases.
- Review coverage has a threshold. Metacritic says its filtered 2023 list excludes titles with fewer than seven critic reviews. The page displayed 487 results when accessed in 2026, so this top 10 reflects eligible entries rather than every game released that year.
- Scores are attached to entries and platforms. Because the page ranks across platforms, check the specific listing when comparing versions; the ranking does not establish that every platform edition shares the same score.
