A very early crack of Denuvo protection is associated with an estimated 20% average drop in a PC game’s total revenue compared with a scenario in which it remained uncracked. But the effect shrinks as a crack is delayed: William M. Volckmann II’s study estimates nearly zero average piracy-related revenue loss when Denuvo survives at least 12 weeks. These are study estimates, not a forecast of a particular publisher’s losses.
What the study estimates
In “Revenue effects of Denuvo digital rights management on PC video games,” William M. Volckmann II estimates how piracy affects revenue for PC games using Denuvo. The paper appeared in Entertainment Computing, volume 52, in January 2025, as article 100885. The author uses variation in when games are cracked to estimate revenue displacement relative to an uncracked counterfactual. The journal abstract and article record provide the reported findings.
| Crack timing or measure | Study estimate |
|---|---|
| Very early crack | An estimated 20% average decrease in total revenue relative to the uncracked counterfactual. |
| Protection from piracy displacement across estimates | 15% mean and 20% median of total revenue. |
| Denuvo remains uncracked for at least 12 weeks | Nearly zero average total-revenue loss from piracy. |
The figures describe estimated effects in the study’s PC-game setting. The 15% mean and 20% median are not guaranteed sales gains, and the early-crack estimate does not establish how much money any named publisher or title lost.
Why timing matters
The central result is about the launch window: the estimated piracy effect is largest when a crack arrives very early, and weakens as the crack is delayed. The abstract says that when Denuvo survives for at least 12 weeks, piracy leads to “nearly zero total revenue loss on average.” “Nearly zero” is the study’s wording; it should not be treated as an exact zero or a promise that every game is unaffected after that point.

For a publisher, the result suggests that the timing of a crack may matter more than treating Denuvo as permanent protection. The study’s abstract concludes there is little justification for using Denuvo long-term—more than three months—particularly in light of potential technical side effects and user dislike. That is the author’s interpretation of the estimated trade-off, not a universal rule for every release.
What the findings do—and do not—show
They concern PC games, not the entire games market
The estimates address PC games protected with Denuvo. They do not establish the revenue effect for console games, every publisher, or the video-game market as a whole.

They are not a title-by-title loss calculation
The 20% early-crack estimate compares average total revenue with an uncracked counterfactual. It cannot be translated directly into a verified cash loss for a particular release without title-specific evidence.
Observed game characteristics did not explain cracking likelihood
The abstract says, “The characteristics of a game cannot explain its likelihood of being cracked.” This is a finding about the study’s analysis; it does not prove that crack timing is random in every circumstance or that no other factors influence it.

What this means for a Denuvo decision
The study gives publishers evidence for weighing launch-window protection against the costs of keeping DRM in place. Its estimates point to the greatest potential revenue protection when a crack comes quickly, with much less apparent benefit after 12 weeks. The author also flags possible technical side effects and user dislike as reasons to be cautious about long-term deployment. The abstract does not provide enough detail to quantify those costs or determine the right policy for an individual game.
HotHardware’s October 15, 2024 report similarly describes a temporary launch-window approach as a possible compromise. That is an interpretation of the study’s timing result, not a measured publisher outcome. Read the secondary report.
