If The Sims 4 says “The game failed to save. Error Code: 0,” first protect your existing files, then try recovering an earlier save before testing the cause. Error Code 0 does not identify one universal problem: the right next step depends on whether you play on PC/Mac or console and whether the game can save to a new slot.
What Error Code 0 means—and what it doesn’t
“The game failed to save. Error Code: 0” means the save attempt failed; the message alone does not explain why. EA forum discussions describe more than one possible reason. One player reported that saving to a new file worked when overwriting an existing one did not, but that report is not a guaranteed fix or a diagnosis for every player. A past patch fixed one specific case
EA’s April 2022 patch notes included fixes for Error Code 0. The notes said games with Neighborhood Stories configured to let neighbors “Join a Career” should then be able to save normally. This is a documented historical fix for a specific configuration—not proof that the same issue explains current reports or that the patch resolved every save failure. The patch article lists PC version 1.86.166.1030, Mac version 1.86.166.1230, and console version 1.57.2; those are historical version numbers, not current versions. Recover an earlier save before troubleshooting files
If the game has an earlier recovery point, try that before changing or removing files. EA’s recovery guidance distinguishes manual saves from autosave: there is one autosave slot, and each autosave replaces the previous one. Older autosaves cannot be recovered through that slot. Manual save slots retain multiple points.

- From the main menu, select Load Game.
- Select the affected save slot.
- Choose Recover Save.
- Select an available earlier save point and load it.
If recovery works, create a separate manual save rather than relying on autosave alone. See EA’s instructions for restoring a previous Sims 4 save.
On PC or Mac, back up the Sims 4 folder before testing
EA’s PC/Mac troubleshooting procedure starts with a separate copy of the Sims 4 user folder. Keep that backup untouched while you test; it preserves your original files if a reset or isolation step affects the game state. - Copy the Sims 4 folder to another location before resetting or moving anything. Do not use your only copy for testing.
- Test the game with a clean user folder by following EA’s reset instructions. Check whether a new game can save.
- Restore backed-up folders one at a time, testing after each restoration. This can narrow down whether a particular folder is involved.
- If restoring the Saves folder brings the failure back, test individual save files from the backup to identify which one is associated with the problem.
- Keep the backup until you have confirmed which save and game state are usable.
A separate drive can be used as a backup destination, but storage does not repair Error Code 0. EA’s guidance is to copy the folder elsewhere; it does not recommend a particular device or capacity.
Consider mods only as one possibility
EA notes that a mod may be involved if earlier troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. That does not establish mods as the cause of every Error Code 0 report. Test methodically, changing one category at a time and preserving the backup, rather than deleting files indiscriminately.

On console, use console-specific support
Players have reported “Sims 4 Error Code: 0” on console as well as PC. PC/Mac instructions for the Sims 4 folder do not apply to console storage, and the available support material does not establish one universal console remedy. Use EA’s current console-specific troubleshooting guidance for your platform rather than following PC folder-reset steps. EA forum thread: Sims 4 Error Code 0 on console.

Choose the next test based on what happens
- A new save works but overwriting fails: Preserve the original slot and use a new manual slot for now. This pattern has been reported in EA’s forum, but it does not prove the underlying cause.
- An earlier recovery point is available: Try it through Load Game → Recover Save before resetting files.
- A clean PC/Mac user folder saves successfully: Restore backed-up folders in stages, testing each time, then test individual save files if restoring Saves triggers the failure.
- The issue continues on console: Follow platform-specific EA console support; PC/Mac folder steps are not interchangeable.
