EA has not announced a game called The Sims 5 or said that it has permanently canceled a successor. Its current direction is clearer on two points: The Sims 4 will continue to receive content and updates, and Project Rene is a separate social experience—not The Sims 4’s successor. EA also says single-player PC and console experiences remain part of the franchise’s future.
Is The Sims 5 happening?
As of EA’s January 9, 2026 franchise update, there is no confirmed title, release date, or feature list for a new single-player game that could be called The Sims 5. EA has not said that a future successor will never happen, either. So “The Sims 5 is not happening” is too definitive if taken as a permanent cancellation announcement; the more accurate reading is that EA has not announced one and is pursuing a broader set of Sims experiences instead.

In its January 2026 update, EA said it is building a family of experiences across PC, console, and mobile, each with its own focus. The Sims Team also said, “Single-player PC and console experiences will always be a part of our future,” adding that more than half of its global development team is dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution.” EA did not identify that next evolution as a named game or provide a launch window.
Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
No. EA describes Project Rene as a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation experience. The Sims Team said it “has evolved to focus on social multiplayer play, offering a more direct way for friends to share creativity together.” EA explicitly states that Rene “is not the successor to The Sims 4 and is a separate experience from any future deep, single player life simulation experience.”

- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
That distinction matters: Project Rene should not be treated as a confirmed replacement for The Sims 4 or as the announced The Sims 5. EA said players could expect more news in 2026 and that playtesting would continue across multiple products and experiences. It also cautioned that early builds, prototypes, names, and concepts are experimental, and that some experiments may not proceed. Testing or discussing a concept is not confirmation of a commercial release.
Will The Sims 4 still get updates?
Yes. EA’s January 2026 statement says, “We’ll continue to deliver content and updates to The Sims 4 and we are committed to improving the experience.” That is the clearest current official commitment to ongoing support.

EA’s February 24, 2026 quality-of-life roadmap describes work aimed at reliability and reducing gameplay friction, based on player feedback. Its announced areas of investigation for March through August included:
- Sim autonomy, including sleep behavior.
- Infant and caregiver autonomy and milestones.
- Crashes and data loss.
EA said the March batch was in testing and was then expected to include around 55 fixes, including fixes for 7 of the 10 top reported issues. Those were EA’s expectations in February for a planned batch, not a verified account of what ultimately shipped. For September through December, the roadmap listed dining and meal behavior, and family trees and relationships, as possible focus themes. EA cautioned that timing and specifics could vary, some topics required deeper technical investigation, and priorities could change. These roadmap themes are areas of work, not a guarantee that every listed issue will be fixed on a particular date.

How EA’s current Sims plans differ
| Experience | What EA says | What is not confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| The Sims 4 | EA says it will continue to deliver content and updates and improve the experience; its 2026 roadmap identifies quality-of-life work. | The roadmap does not guarantee that every issue will be fixed or establish fixed delivery dates. |
| Project Rene | EA describes a social, collaborative, mobile-first experience and says it is not The Sims 4’s successor. | EA’s January 2026 statement does not establish Rene as The Sims 5 or confirm a final release date, title, or feature set. |
| Future single-player experience | EA says single-player PC and console experiences will remain part of the franchise’s future. | No specific game title, release date, or feature list is announced in that statement. |
What this means for players
If you are waiting for a traditional new single-player Sims game, EA’s statement leaves that possibility open but gives no concrete product announcement to plan around. If your question is whether The Sims 4 is being abandoned now that Rene exists, EA’s answer is no: it says updates and content will continue. Rene has a different stated focus, and the current announcement does not make it a direct replacement.
EA’s earlier September 2024 franchise overview had already described a move beyond a linear sequence of Sims releases, with The Sims 4 remaining foundational while the franchise explored multiple kinds of games. The January 2026 update makes the present distinction more explicit: continued support for The Sims 4, a separate social direction for Rene, and an ongoing place for single-player PC and console experiences.
