No Sims 4 multiplayer DLC was announced in EA’s January 9, 2026 update. The multiplayer discussion was about Project Rene, which EA describes as a separate, mobile-first social game—not the successor to The Sims 4. EA says Sims 4 will continue to receive content and updates, while future single-player Sims experiences for PC and console remain part of its plans. EA’s statement does not say that The Sims 5 is cancelled or confirm whether a numbered sequel is in development.
Is The Sims 5 happening?
EA’s January 9, 2026 update does not announce a game called The Sims 5 or say that one is in development. It also does not establish that a future numbered sequel has been ruled out. The clearest takeaway is that EA is pursuing more than one direction for The Sims: continued support for The Sims 4, Project Rene as a separate social experience, and future single-player Sims experiences for PC and console.

EA describes Project Rene as “not the successor to The Sims 4” and “a separate experience from any future deep, single player life simulation experience.” That distinction means Project Rene should not be treated as confirmation of The Sims 5—or as evidence that EA has cancelled it.
Is The Sims 4 getting multiplayer DLC?
Not according to this update. EA’s multiplayer discussion concerns Project Rene, not a multiplayer expansion or downloadable content for The Sims 4. The announcement does not give Sims 4 a multiplayer DLC name, release date, price, or feature list.

EA says The Sims 4 will continue receiving content and updates, and that the team is committed to improving the game. That confirms ongoing support, but it does not identify multiplayer as part of an upcoming Sims 4 release.
What is Project Rene?
Project Rene is EA’s social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim project. EA says it is separate from The Sims 4 and from any future deep, single-player life simulation experience. The update does not provide a release date or a complete product or platform plan, so more specific claims about its launch or features are not established by this announcement.

- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers

- Live the Immortal Life
EA says playtesting of multiple Sims products and experiences will continue in 2026, and notes that some experiments may not move forward. That describes ongoing exploration, not a confirmed launch schedule for Project Rene.
How the three Sims directions differ
| Experience | What EA says | What remains unconfirmed |
|---|---|---|
| The Sims 4 | Content and updates will continue; EA is committed to improving the experience. | The January 9 update does not announce multiplayer DLC. |
| Project Rene | A social, collaborative, mobile-first life-sim project, separate from The Sims 4 and not its successor. | The update does not establish a release date or full product details. |
| Future single-player Sims experience | EA says single-player PC and console experiences remain part of the future. | The update does not name a specific game, announce a release date, or confirm that the product will be called The Sims 5. |
EA also says more than half of its global development team is dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution” of single-player PC and console experiences. The statement signals investment in both ongoing support and future single-player work, but does not identify a particular sequel or timeline.

Where to find current Sims 4 DLC
EA describes the Sims 4 Marketplace as its official in-game storefront for downloadable content. It lists Maker Packs from approved Sims Makers alongside EA-created Expansion Packs, Game Packs, Stuff Packs, and Kits. Readers looking for current Sims 4 content can check EA’s Marketplace page; that storefront is separate from Project Rene and is not an announcement of multiplayer DLC.
EA says Kits became exclusive to the Marketplace on PC and Mac when the storefront launched on March 17, 2026. For consoles, the change is tied to the Marketplace arriving on each platform; EA says it will provide updates ahead of that transition.
