First-person shooters in 2025 had a major, multi-platform release in Battlefield 6, but the available evidence does not establish an overall winner across the genre. EA reported strong opening figures for its game; Steam charts offer a useful but PC-only view of activity. Neither can stand in for a complete cross-platform ranking.
What defined FPS games in 2025?
Battlefield 6 is a clear example of the year’s big-budget, broad-format shooter: Electronic Arts announced it for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a launch date of October 10, 2025. EA described a package that combines a single-player campaign with multiplayer modes, vehicles, and Battlefield Portal, a sandbox for creating player experiences. The company also described continued seasonal content, meaning the launch offering is only one point in an evolving live-service game.
That breadth is the game’s central proposition. It is not only a multiplayer release: players can approach it through the campaign, large-scale multiplayer, or Portal’s community-oriented tools. EA’s August PC feature also described Steam availability, Javelin anti-cheat, PC customization, and Portal tools. Those are publisher descriptions, not independent evidence of PC performance or a guarantee of how the game runs on a particular system.
What do Battlefield 6’s launch figures show?
Electronic Arts reported that Battlefield 6 sold over 7 million copies in its first three days. EA also reported 172 million online matches during the three-day launch weekend and over 15 million hours watched on streaming services during that weekend. The company said the game reached the highest concurrent-player count in franchise history.

These are EA-reported figures, not independently audited measures, and their time windows and definitions should not be treated as directly comparable with another publisher’s sales or engagement claims. They establish that EA described a substantial launch; they do not establish the biggest FPS audience or sales total across platforms for the year.

How should you read FPS popularity rankings?
Valve’s Steam Charts page provides live, weekly, monthly, and yearly views, including a Best of 2025 section. A live player counter is a changing snapshot; a year-end comparison should use a dated historical chart and name the metric and platform. Steam rankings describe activity or storefront performance on Steam according to the selected chart. They do not measure console activity, sales across all stores, or the entire FPS genre.
EA’s launch figures and Valve’s Steam charts answer different questions: one is a publisher’s report about a game’s opening, while the other is a platform-specific view of Steam. Neither supplies a harmonized cross-platform comparison across the 2025 FPS field. As a result, it would be misleading to declare an all-platform winner from either source alone.

Which 2025 shooter should you play?
If you want a shooter with a campaign as well as multiplayer, vehicles, and creator tools, Battlefield 6 is a relevant option, and EA confirmed versions for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Its seasonal structure also means its content can change over time. Those characteristics describe the package EA announced; they are not a substitute for independent assessment of how its modes play or perform.
For any comparison with another shooter, first decide what matters to you: campaign versus multiplayer focus, match scale and pace, competitive versus cooperative or social play, supported platforms, and whether you want an ongoing seasonal game. Popularity figures should be compared only when their source, platform, metric, and time period are clear. The evidence available here does not provide a complete, comparable set of figures for major competitors.
