Those facts make a case for the show’s achievement and for a clearer separation between producing the event and choosing its awards. They do not prove that Keighley has been broadly “redeemed”: reach is not the same as trust, and no representative measure of current audience opinion establishes a consensus.
What The Game Awards has built
Geoff Keighley says he launched The Game Awards in 2014 as an independent, digital-first show, initially self-financing the project. Its scale has since become striking. The organizer reported an estimated 171 million global livestreams for the 2025 broadcast, an 11% increase over its reported 154 million in 2024. These are organizer-reported livestream counts, not independently audited unique viewers; the 2025 total covers the full broadcast and excludes associated clips and trailers. The Game Awards’ 2025 announcement gives that counting qualification, while its 2024 announcement reported 154 million, up 31% from the 118 million reported for 2023.
Those figures show that the show has become a powerful distribution event for game announcements, performances and awards. They cannot, by themselves, show that viewers approve of its choices, regard its winners as artistically definitive or feel that earlier criticism has been answered.
What makes The Game Awards worth remembering
The show’s strongest claim is not that every award or announcement satisfies everyone. It is that a games-centered event has sustained a large global audience while bringing awards and major reveals together in one broadcast. That combination gives the ceremony cultural visibility beyond the list of winners: it is also a stage on which the industry presents what it wants players to notice next.

The most concrete recent example is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, named Game of the Year at the 2025 awards. That is a meaningful accolade from the show, not proof that the award settles debate about the year’s best game. Readers who want to follow the winner can use the award as a starting point and decide for themselves whether the game suits them.
How winners are chosen—and what Keighley’s role is
The current official FAQ says a jury of more than 100 international media and influencer outlets selects nominees in most categories. It also states that Keighley is not a jury member and does not vote on nominees or winners. That is an important distinction between producing the show and casting an award vote.

In a 2019 Reddit AMA, Keighley described the jury at that time as 80 global media outlets and said, “I don’t vote on the nominees or winners – that’s done by a jury of 80 global media outlets that we list on the website.” The 80-outlet figure is historical; the current FAQ gives the organizer’s present public description. In the same AMA, he acknowledged that his industry relationships and production role could create concerns for audiences. A stated voting boundary addresses whether he casts a vote; it does not automatically eliminate every concern about the influence or perceived conflicts that can accompany a producer’s industry relationships.
Why the show’s history matters
The Game Awards followed the Spike Video Game Awards, which ran from 2003 to 2013. An academic analysis published through DiGRA places both within the history of game award shows and cautions against treating “the Oscars of gaming” as a straightforward comparison. It also argues that the Spike awards gave prominence to Hollywood personalities over game developers. The analysis is useful as historical context for why a games award show’s tone, format and representation matter; it is not a survey of what audiences think about The Game Awards today. The comparison is therefore not a simple verdict that one show solved everything the other got wrong. The evidence supports a change in distribution model and a public description of the current voting process. It does not establish a comprehensive, like-for-like comparison of every production choice or audience response.

“Redemption” is a judgment about reputation, not a result that audience totals can prove. The case in Keighley’s favor is substantial but specific: he says he built an independent digital-first event, the show has achieved considerable reach, and the organizer’s stated rules place award voting with a jury rather than its producer.

The limits matter just as much. Viewership does not establish artistic legitimacy or public approval. A formal separation between production and voting does not erase all perceived conflicts, and criticism of the earlier Spike awards does not prove that present-day criticism has been resolved. The available evidence shows institutional growth and a stated voting boundary; it does not establish a broad public consensus that Keighley or The Game Awards has been redeemed.
