Yes, The Sims 4 autosaves, but it keeps only one Autosave slot. Each new autosave replaces the previous entry, so Autosave is not a browsable history of older game states. To keep earlier versions, create manual saves; on PC and Mac, you can also back up the game folder separately.
How Autosave works in The Sims 4
EA Help says the game has one Autosave slot, updated whenever an autosave is triggered. The latest entry appears in the Main Menu’s Load Game list with “Autosave” in its title. Because the slot is replaced by the next autosave, it does not provide a series of historical Autosaves to browse. EA Help’s saved-game recovery guide says older Autosaves can’t be recovered.
Autosave runs alongside manual saves and can briefly pause Live Mode while an “Autosaving” indicator appears. Do not close the game or turn off your device during that process. Loading-screen autosave is on by default, including when Sims travel to another lot or when exiting the game. The specific triggers depend on your settings.
Which events can trigger an autosave?
EA Help lists loading screens, exiting Build Mode, real-time intervals, and in-game calendar schedules as possible triggers. The chosen settings determine which apply.

- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers

- Loading screen: On by default. On PC and Mac, it can be changed in Options → Game Options → Save Settings. On console, loading-screen autosave is always on and cannot be disabled.
- Exiting Build Mode: An autosave can be set to trigger when you leave Build Mode.
- Real-time interval: Options are off, every 30 minutes, every hour, or every two hours.
- In-game time: Options are off, daily at midnight, or weekly on Sunday.
Save Reminder notifications are off by default. On PC and Mac, they can be set for every 15 or 30 minutes, every one or two hours, or off. Choosing Save Game from a reminder creates a manual save; it does not replace the Autosave slot. See EA Help’s Autosave guide for the settings details.
How to load the latest Autosave
- From the Main Menu, choose Load Game.
- Find the entry with “Autosave” in its title.
- Select it and choose Play.
This loads the current Autosave entry, not an earlier version of that slot.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
How to recover an earlier manual save
Manual saves are the in-game way to retain earlier save points. EA says each manual slot keeps several save points from recent play sessions. To recover one:
- From the Main Menu, choose Load Game.
- Select the game in the manual save slot you want to restore.
- Choose Recover Save, shown as a floppy-disk icon.
- Select the save point you want, then choose Play.
This recovery method applies to manual save points; it should not be treated as a way to retrieve a superseded Autosave.

- Rule your story: Build a powerful Dynasty, shape shared Values, choose an Heir, or exile family members in a deep life simulation driven by legacy, prestige, and choice.
- Claim the crown: Rise through Nobility by winning the people, pleasing rival Nobles, dueling with swords, or exposing Scandals that can change the balance of power.
- Scandal fuels drama: Forbidden romances, secret children, and public disgrace can impact careers, relationships, Dynasty Prestige, and Noble Favor.
Back up the game folder on PC or Mac
A separate folder copy gives PC and Mac players another backup outside the in-game save slots. The Sims Team recommends copying the folder regularly, especially before significant changes such as an update, a new pack, a major build, or adding mods. Its backup and reset guide identifies the folder as Documents → Electronic Arts → The Sims 4 on Windows and the same Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 path in Finder on Mac.
- Locate the The Sims 4 folder in Documents/Electronic Arts.
- Copy the folder to another location, such as a flash drive or cloud storage.
- Repeat the copy regularly and before significant game changes.
If you need to restore a backup, follow the Sims Team guide’s restoration steps carefully; it instructs users to replace the game folder with the copied one. This is separate backup practice, not evidence that the game maintains multiple recoverable Autosave slots.

- A Different World - Explore StrangerVille, a rural desert town shrouded in secrecy. Encounter weird weather, creepy townies, dangerous plants, odd collectibles, and more.
- Unravel the Story – Immerse your Sim in unique and mysterious events. Unmarked vans appear in neighborhoods, government agents use secret listening devices, and scanners are key in detecting the unusual.
- Crack the Code – Have your Sims investigate using their Military training, searching for clues to solve a mystery that lies within the secret lab.
- Suit Up Your Sim – Get Sims in the mystery-solving mood by gearing them up in desert-inspired clothing and military fatigues, or prepare them for the end with conspiracy-themed clothes, secret agent attire, and a hazmat suit.
Can you recover an overwritten Autosave?
The official guidance is inconsistent. EA Help says older Autosaves cannot be recovered, while the Sims Team’s backup guide describes files named .ver0, .ver1, and so on, and says they may be restored through Recover Save or by renaming them. It also says lower version numbers are more recent. The two pages do not explain how those instructions align, so recovery of a superseded Autosave is uncertain. Do not rely on a .ver file as your only way to get back an overwritten version.
The safer approach is to create manual saves for in-game recovery points and keep a separate copy of the game folder on PC or Mac.
