Yes—the Super Mario sequel was officially confirmed, and it has already been released. Its official title is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Nintendo says its global release began April 1, 2026; the film opened in Japan on April 24. It is also available for home viewing, with digital availability beginning May 19 and 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases following June 16, 2026.
What is Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 called?
The sequel’s official title is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, announced by Nintendo on September 12, 2025. It follows the 2023 animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Nintendo reported that the earlier film had earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide; that figure is for the predecessor, not the sequel.

When did The Super Mario Galaxy Movie come out?
The release date changed after the title announcement, so older listings may show the superseded date of April 3, 2026.

These are historical release dates: as of October 8, 2026, the movie is no longer upcoming. Nintendo reported more than $800 million USD in worldwide box-office gross during the film’s first four weeks. That is a time-bounded figure, not a final lifetime total, and it should not be compared directly with the predecessor’s reported worldwide gross.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced digital availability beginning May 19, 2026, followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases on June 16, 2026. The announcement establishes those formats and dates; it does not establish current availability at a particular store or streaming service. Check the listing in your country for its current purchase or viewing options, language and subtitle choices, and any retailer-specific extras.
Who made the sequel?
Nintendo and Illumination announced the new animated film on March 10, 2024. Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto were named as producers, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic as directors, and Matthew Fogel as screenwriter. Universal Pictures and Nintendo co-financed the film, and Universal Pictures distributed it theatrically worldwide.

What movie merchandise was announced?
NBCUniversal’s March 19, 2026 merchandise announcement named several licensed products, including interactive Luma shoulder pals, Spin Master’s Hatchin’ Yoshi!, and Jakks Pacific 5-inch character figures. The announcement identifies product collaborations, but not current stock or retailer availability. Check retailers directly before buying.
Nintendo has also described film-related licensing as a way to extend its characters and worlds into merchandise and live events. It says Nintendo Stars Inc. operates, licenses, and manages ancillary uses for films featuring Nintendo intellectual property. That describes a licensing function, not a publicly available affiliate program or its terms.
