But disc play, downloadable content and language support are separate questions. Check the exact console model, the game’s language options and the disc’s licensed region before buying.
Will a Japanese PS5 disc work on your console?
Sony’s disc instructions explain how to insert and install a PS5 game disc and note that the disc must remain in the console while you play. That means you need a PS5 with a disc drive; a disc cannot be inserted into a digital-only console. Sony’s published guidance does not make a blanket guarantee covering every imported disc and console combination, so check the specific game and console rather than assuming every release is supported. See Sony’s instructions for playing games from disc.
- Confirm your PS5 has a disc drive.
- Insert the Japanese PS5 disc and install the game.
- Keep the disc inserted when you play.
Will Japanese DLC work with your account?
Do not assume that add-ons, DLC or in-game currency will work just because the base game disc does. Sony says the disc’s licensed country or region must match the country or region of the PlayStation account for DLC and related content to work. The disc’s licensed region is identified in the small print on the game case. Check that information against your account before purchasing add-ons. Sony explains the region requirements for DLC and in-game content.
Your PlayStation account country or region cannot be changed after the account is created. Sony’s account country and region guidance explains how to check the setting, so verify it before buying a disc if you expect to use its add-ons.

Does the Japanese edition include English?
Not necessarily. Language availability varies by game title, so the fact that a copy is sold in Japan does not establish that it includes English. Check the language list for the exact edition on its official product page or packaging before buying. Sony states that game language options vary by title.
What if your PS5 is digital-only?
A digital-only PS5 cannot play a game disc unless the specific console model supports a compatible separately sold disc drive. Sony’s Japan-only Japanese-language PS5 Digital Edition is a distinct model: it supports Japanese PlayStation accounts and digital games from the Japanese PlayStation Store, and its console language is Japanese. Sony says a disc drive is sold separately for that model; do not assume the same drive option applies to every digital PS5. Check Sony’s support page for the Japanese-language-only model and verify your exact model before buying hardware or a disc.

Is the Japanese game actually a PS4 title?
If the imported game is a PS4 disc rather than a PS5 disc, PS5 backward compatibility is a separate consideration. Sony says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, but some titles are excluded; the unsupported list may vary by region and can change. Check the title against Sony’s PS4 games playable on PS5 list. A disc version also requires a PS5 with a disc drive.

Before you buy: a quick checklist
- Console: Confirm your PS5 has a disc drive or that its exact digital-only model supports one.
- Edition: Check that the product is the PS5 version if that is what you want; PS4 discs have separate backward-compatibility considerations.
- Language: Verify the exact release’s supported languages rather than inferring them from where it is sold.
- Add-ons: Match the disc’s licensed region, printed on the case, to your PlayStation account’s country or region.
- Account: Check your account region before purchase, since Sony does not allow it to be changed after account creation.
