The console has a 4:3/16:9 screen-size setting, but most games do not use it to switch to widescreen. Check the individual title and release instead of assuming the system setting will make it widescreen.
What 16:9 support means on PS2
A game with its own widescreen support can render or display a 16:9 image through a game-specific mode. That is different from changing the console’s screen-size setting or stretching a 4:3 picture on a television. ConsoleMods explains that the PS2 offers a system-level 4:3/16:9 option, but most games rely on their own settings and do not read that option to enable widescreen: PS2: Games with Alternative Display Modes.
- Game-provided 16:9: The title offers or uses widescreen support. Look for a setting in the game’s menus or check a compatibility entry for the exact release.
- TV stretching: A display can fill a 16:9 screen with a 4:3 image, but this changes the image’s shape; it does not mean the game renders in widescreen.
- Patch or cheat: A game-specific modification may alter the display, but that does not make widescreen a feature of the unmodified game.
Examples of games with different support
The community-maintained PS2 Developer Wiki list of games with alternative display modes includes both 16:9-capable and non-supporting entries. For example, it marks Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies and Ape Escape 2 as supporting 16:9, while All-Star Baseball 2005 and Alien Hominid are listed as not supporting it. These are list entries, not guarantees for every regional or revised release.
How to check your game
- Identify the release. Check the title, region, and, where available, the disc or revision identifier. Compatibility may differ between releases.
- Check the game’s own menus. Look for a display, screen, or aspect-ratio option. A system-level 16:9 setting alone is not proof that the game uses widescreen.
- Consult a title-specific entry. Use the alternative display-mode lists, and confirm that the entry refers to your release. These are community-maintained references, not Sony warranties.
- Separate native support from modifications. If you use an emulator or a cheat, verify that the patch is for the exact game and release; record whether the result is patched or unmodified.
Widescreen is not the same as progressive scan
16:9 describes the image’s aspect ratio. Progressive scan, commonly listed as 480p for PS2 games, is a separate display-mode feature. The PS2 Developer Wiki tracks 16:9 and 480p in separate columns; its regional warning that PAL and NTSC-U/C versions can differ applies to 480p support, not automatically to widescreen support. Do not treat a 480p listing as evidence of 16:9, or vice versa.

Can a PS2 game be forced into widescreen?
Sometimes. ConsoleMods describes widescreen cheats and executable modifications, while PCSX2’s Writing Patches documentation describes a Widescreen 16:9 patch group and the gsaspectratio=16:9 setting. Such options are game-specific: availability and results depend on the title, release, and platform. A patch is an alternative to native support, not evidence that the original game supports widescreen.
For example, the PCSX2 patch repository has an ICO widescreen patch for SCPS-56001. Its game-specific commands illustrate why a patch must match the relevant release; they do not establish universal support for other versions of ICO or other PS2 games.
