Pokémon GO’s Trainer-level cap is now 80, up from 50. The change took effect October 15, 2025, and brought a rebalanced XP curve, new level rewards and updated level-up research. Niantic recalculated Trainers’ levels using XP they had already earned; it did not raise the level cap for Pokémon.
What is the new level cap in Pokémon GO?
The Trainer-level cap increased from level 50 to level 80 on October 15, 2025. This update applies to Trainer progression, not Pokémon levels. Niantic’s official announcement describes the cap change and its rewards; the Pokémon GO update announcement also provides the published XP milestones.

How did the XP changes affect existing players?
Niantic recalculated each Trainer’s level against a new XP curve, using total XP already earned. The new curve means players reach levels more frequently than under the previous progression system. Niantic said no player would lose a level and that Trainers who were at level 23 or higher would gain at least one level.
The milestone figures below are cumulative totals—the XP needed to have earned by the time you reach that level—not the cost of advancing from the previous level. Niantic published these milestones, but not a complete XP table for every level from 1 through 80, so missing level requirements should not be inferred from them.

What changed about level-up research and older rewards?
The former Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41–50 were removed. Trainers progressing through levels 71–80 must complete new level-up research tasks as well as meet the XP requirements.
Avatar items previously earned by reaching levels 40–50 are no longer available as leveling rewards after the change. Niantic specifically said the Level 50 Jacket would no longer be earnable through leveling; players keep rewards they had already earned, including the jacket.

Is the October 2026 GO Pass another leveling update?
No. The October 2026 GO Pass is a time-limited seasonal pass, separate from the permanent Trainer-level system. Niantic lists its run as October 6 at 10:00 a.m. through November 3 at 10:00 a.m. local time. Its pass-specific bonuses include increased Stardust and XP from hatching Eggs starting at rank 75; they do not change the level cap or XP thresholds. Availability of paid upgrades varies by region. Check the official October 2026 GO Pass announcement for current offer details.
