That is the launch roster count—not the total including guest racers and later crossover content. SEGA planned additional characters for post-launch updates and DLC, so 23 should not be read as the game’s complete roster today.
What does the launch count of 23 include?
SEGA’s 2025 launch announcement described 23 playable characters from the Sonic universe. The figure applies to that launch roster; it does not count every guest character or later addition. The announcement did not establish a complete, current character count or provide a verified full list of all 23 names.
How do guest racers and DLC fit in?
SEGA announced that Hatsune Miku, Joker from Persona 5 Royal, and Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon would arrive in free post-launch updates. In an October 2025 announcement, SEGA confirmed Joker became playable on October 23, 2025. These guest racers are separate from the 23-character Sonic-universe launch count.
SEGA also described crossover character packs featuring Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, and PAC-MAN as premium DLC. Its launch-period announcement said the Season Pass would add crossover racers, vehicles, and courses as they became available. The second lap changes the course and can introduce gates and Frenzy events; racers return to the original course for lap three. SEGA also describes machine customization and more than 70 gadgets.
What multiplayer modes and player counts did SEGA describe?
SEGA’s product information lists local play for one to four players and online play for up to 12. It describes World Match as a 12-player race and also identifies team-oriented Festival events and Time Trial among the online modes. These figures and features are publisher descriptions, not independent test results.

Why did Sonic Team emphasize a broad roster?
In a PlayStation Blog interview, Sonic Team Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka explained the design intent: “We felt it was necessary to feature a wide variety of Sega characters as playable racers, since that was a core feature people loved in the previous titles.”
SEGA’s October 23, 2025 announcement reported more than 1 million units sold worldwide, including physical units and digital downloads across platforms. That is a dated sales snapshot, not a current sales total.
