Lan Yan was officially introduced ahead of Genshin Impact Version 5.3 as a new 4-star Liyue character: an Anemo catalyst user whose signature combat technique is the Swallow-Wisp Shield. The word “leak” in older coverage is misleading—the reveal was public before the update launched on January 1, 2025.
Who is Lan Yan in Genshin Impact?
Lan Yan is a craftswoman from Liyue associated with the Chenyu Vale Artisans Association. In HoYoverse’s December 20, 2024 Version 5.3 preview, Studio Technical Director Zhenzhong Yi described her as “a descendant and inheritor of the renowned Qimen Arts.” PlayStation Blog
Her character concept connects that artisan background to a family-passed combat technique. Yi wrote that “In combat, Lan Yan wields the Swallow-Wisp Shield, a secret art passed down through her family for generations.”
Is Lan Yan a 4-star, and what element and weapon does she use?
Yes. Lan Yan is a 4-star character from Liyue who uses Anemo and a catalyst. Her shield is the defining feature of her combat style: HoYoverse’s official character material says she can dash into a target and rebound into the air, while using the Swallow-Wisp Shield.

How the Swallow-Wisp Shield works
Under the stated elemental absorption condition, the shield can absorb Hydro, Pyro, Cryo, or Electro and deal damage of the corresponding type in return. The official reveal establishes these elemental interactions, but does not justify assuming particular shield-strength rankings or damage values.
When did Lan Yan release?
Version 5.3 launched on January 1, 2025. Lan Yan debuted in the update’s Phase II Event Wishes alongside reruns of Arlecchino and Clorinde. During the Version 5.3 Lantern Rite event, players who met its requirements could invite one free 4-star Liyue character, with Lan Yan among the choices. This was a one-character event reward, separate from trying to obtain her through the Phase II Event Wish. The invitation applied to the Version 5.3 event window, not a reward that can be claimed now.
