Marvel Rivals mods, including fan-made skins, appeared to stop working after the Season One update in January 2025. NetEase’s official patch notes did not announce that mods were disabled, however, and the explanation that the game began checking asset hashes came from player reports—not a confirmed technical statement from NetEase.
Why did Marvel Rivals mods stop working?
NetEase published its Version 20250110 patch notes on January 8, 2025, for the Season One update. They list new content—including Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman, costumes, a battle pass, a map and a mode—as well as gameplay and settings changes. The notes do not mention disabling mods: Marvel Rivals Version 20250110 patch notes.
Two days later, PC Gamer reported that the update appeared to have disabled mods. The report attributed an explanation involving asset hash checking to users in the Marvel Rivals Discord. According to those players, the checks were intended to prevent client-side changes to game files. That account explains what players believed was happening, but it is not confirmation from NetEase: PC Gamer’s January 10, 2025 report.
Did Season One disable custom skins?
Fan-made skins and other cosmetic mods were among the community-created modifications affected in reports following the update. The careful answer is that they appeared to stop working; the official patch notes do not say that NetEase specifically targeted custom skins or describe a mod-blocking change.

That distinction matters: observed failure after an update and an official announcement of intent are not the same thing. The January 2025 reporting documented the former, while the patch notes do not establish the latter.
Can you get banned for using a Marvel Rivals skin mod?
There is a meaningful risk in modifying the game client, but the reviewed evidence does not establish that every cosmetic-only skin mod automatically results in a ban. PC Gamer reported that the game’s terms prohibited modding and that NetEase told IGN players who mod their installations risk being banned. That statement is available here through PC Gamer’s account, rather than a primary NetEase source.

NetEase’s May 25, 2026 “Penalty Announcement: Zero Tolerance on Cheats” gives broader current guidance. It says the company uses anti-cheat monitoring and manual verification, and that accounts confirmed to use cheats, illicit assist programs or client tampering have been permanently banned. The announcement urges players not to download, purchase, distribute or use “cheats, scripts, game modifiers, or illicit third-party tools.” It does not specifically classify every cosmetic-only skin mod or explain whether all such mods count as client tampering.
A Japanese-language official guide dated February 26, 2025 also lists prohibited software and hardware categories, including modification of certain client configuration files to change the display. Did NetEase announce that mods were disabled?
Not in the Season One patch notes dated January 8, 2025. The reported disruption and asset-hash explanation came from contemporaneous reporting about player observations and community claims. NetEase’s later anti-cheat announcement warns against game modifiers and illicit third-party tools generally, but does not retroactively confirm the reported mechanism or settle how every cosmetic mod is treated.
For players, the practical takeaway is to avoid modifying the client: official guidance warns against game modifiers and third-party tools, while the available sources do not define a safe exception for cosmetic-only skins.
