If your Nintendo Switch got wet, unplug it and turn it off immediately. Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth and let it air-dry for a few days—do not apply heat. If liquid may have entered the console, do not charge it; Nintendo recommends service even if it seems to work. These three paths cover what to do next, from a spill confined to the exterior to specialist repair.
1. Respond safely to a fresh spill
- Disconnect power. Unplug the AC adapter and any connected accessories.
- Turn the console off. Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds, select Power Options, then Turn Off. Do not keep testing whether it works.
- Wipe the exterior. Use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid pushing liquid into openings while wiping.
- Let it air-dry. Leave the console to dry for a few days. Nintendo does not specify an exact number of hours or say that drying will reverse internal damage. Its U.S. support guidance covers Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED: Liquid Was Spilled on the Nintendo Switch Console.
Do not use a blow-dryer, heater, microwave, or other heat source. Nintendo warns that heat may damage the console. Do not put it in rice or try to open it as a first response; neither is a manufacturer-recommended repair technique.
2. If liquid entered the console, arrange service
Liquid inside the console changes the next step: leave it off and do not charge it. Nintendo’s safety guidance says not to charge a console after internal liquid exposure and advises contacting customer service: Health & Safety Precautions: Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Support states, “We recommend sending your console for service, even if issues do not arise immediately.” A console that turns on after a spill may still have internal damage; apparent normal operation is not a reliable all-clear.

Use Nintendo’s service request process to check options for your region: Nintendo repair service. Nintendo of America’s troubleshooting information says physical and liquid damage are not covered by its U.S. warranty: Nintendo Switch system or accessory troubleshooting. Coverage and service availability differ by region, so check the terms that apply where you live. The cited pages do not establish a repair price.
3. Consider independent diagnosis only if you understand the risks
An experienced console repair shop may be an alternative, particularly for a system outside warranty. Liquid indicators, residue, corrosion, or charging symptoms can help a technician investigate, but none alone identifies every failed component. Board replacement may be practical in some cases; component-level motherboard repair requires specialized tools and microsoldering skill. This is not a beginner repair procedure. Before handing over the console, ask the provider:
- Whether it accepts liquid-damaged Nintendo Switch consoles and serves your region.
- Whether diagnosis includes board-level inspection and whether microsoldering is available.
- What the diagnostic fee is and whether it is credited toward a repair.
- What happens if repair is uneconomic, including any fee or return shipping.
- Whether the proposed work affects any remaining warranty or service options.
Compare those answers with Nintendo’s service option before choosing. Do not assume an independent shop’s price, warranty, or repair-success rate; confirm its terms directly.
