Start by identifying whether your board uses belt drive, hub motors, or direct drive, then check the battery, ESC, motor mount, shaft, pulleys, wheels, and wiring before choosing a replacement or upgrade.
Which electric skateboard motor is best for your board?
There is no universal winner among belt-drive, hub, and direct-drive motors. Each design has different hardware, and product specifications alone do not establish how a motor will perform on every board. The available manufacturer pages and drivetrain guide provide specifications and general compatibility advice, not a controlled, independent comparison of motors across brands.
Choose by matching the motor to your board and priorities. For example, a belt-drive replacement must work with the board’s mount, shaft and pulley arrangement, belt, and wheel pulley. A hub motor is built into the wheel assembly, so wheel and truck compatibility matter. A direct-drive motor also needs the correct truck and wheel interface. Electrical compatibility is essential for all three.
| Drive type | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Belt drive | A separate motor turns the wheel through a belt and pulleys. | Motor mount and truck fit; shaft diameter and flat; motor and wheel pulley compatibility; belt pitch and length; electrical ratings; and maintenance and sound preferences. |
| Hub motor | The motor is packaged in the wheel assembly. | Wheel size and replacement options; axle and truck fit; electronics; replacement availability; and intended terrain. |
| Direct drive | A distinct motor design, listed separately from belt and hub products by Hobbywing. | Exact truck and axle interface; compatible wheel assembly; electrical ratings; and the product’s installation requirements. |
These are practical comparison points, not results from a head-to-head test. Hobbywing lists products in all three categories, including its 4230 belt-drive motor, 5230 hub motor, and 5230 direct-drive motor.

What motor specifications actually tell you
KV is a speed constant, not a board-speed rating
Meepo describes KV as the motor’s RPM per volt: a higher-KV motor has a higher speed constant. That number alone does not predict a skateboard’s speed. Battery voltage, controller behavior, gearing, wheel size, load, and motor limits also affect the result. Meepo’s advice is a brand-authored guide, not an independent market survey; see its drivetrain guide, published February 11, 2025.
Peak power and efficiency-point power are different figures
Hobbywing’s 4230 listing reports maximum output and a separate output at the motor’s stated highest-efficiency point. For the 170KV version, the listed maximum is 2252W at 3.95N·m and 5463RPM; the stated highest-efficiency-point output is 726W at 0.92N·m. For the 190KV version, those figures are 2663W at 4.42N·m and 5754RPM, and 998W at its stated highest-efficiency point, respectively. Neither figure should be presented as continuous real-world output.

Read ratings in their listed test context
The following figures are specifications on Hobbywing’s product pages, not a recommendation that a motor will suit any particular board. The 4230 variants are listed for 10–12S LiPo and tested at 48V. The cited hub variant is listed for 10S LiPo and tested at 36V; the direct-drive listing is for 10–12S LiPo and tested at 42V. A rated battery range and a test voltage are not interchangeable descriptions.
| Listed product or variant | Electrical and output figures | Other listed details |
|---|---|---|
| Hobbywing 4230 belt drive, 170KV | 10–12S LiPo; tested at 48V. Maximum output: 2252W at 3.95N·m and 5463RPM. Highest-efficiency-point output: 726W at 0.92N·m. | 485g; 8mm flat shaft with listed 5M14 pulley choices; IPX3. |
| Hobbywing 4230 belt drive, 190KV | 10–12S LiPo; tested at 48V. Maximum output: 2663W at 4.42N·m and 5754RPM. Highest-efficiency-point output: 998W. | 485g; same listed shaft and pulley format as the 170KV version; IPX3. |
| Hobbywing 5230 hub-page variant, 75×63.3mm, 67KV | 10S LiPo; tested at 36V. Listed maximum output: 363W at 2.66N·m and 1304RPM. | IP55. The page includes other table entries with belt-motor-like descriptions, so these figures apply to this identified variant, not every row on the page. |
| Hobbywing 5230 direct drive, 70KV | 10–12S LiPo; tested at 42V. Listed maximum output: 1043W at 6.06N·m and 1644RPM. | 840g; IP55; built-in temperature sensor listed. |
Hobbywing lists IPX3 for the cited belt-drive motor and IP55 for the cited hub and direct-drive products. These are different protection classifications; treat each as product-specific and follow the product instructions rather than assuming either rating makes a motor suitable for wet riding.

Check compatibility before buying a motor
A motor can share a nominal voltage or KV with the one on your board and still fail to fit or operate properly. Meepo warns that mismatched voltage and current ratings can cause a board to fail or be damaged. Identify the exact board and parts before ordering.
- Identify the current drive system. Record whether the board is belt, hub, or direct drive, and find the exact board and motor model if possible.
- Match battery and ESC ratings. Confirm the battery cell configuration and voltage against the motor’s rated range and the ESC’s supported voltage. Check that the ESC supports the motor type and its current needs; do not choose by motor wattage alone.
- Verify belt-drive interfaces, if applicable. Check shaft diameter and flat, motor-pulley tooth count and profile, belt pitch and length, wheel pulley, motor mount, and truck fit.
- Check physical and electrical fit. Compare wheel size and clearance, axle and truck geometry, motor dimensions, mounting space, wire routing and connectors, and sensor configuration.
- Read the product’s own installation and protection information. Confirm that its ratings and instructions suit the intended setup; do not treat an IP rating as a substitute for those instructions.
Can you change a hub motor into a belt drive?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the exact board and parts; it cannot be determined from the drive type alone. A belt-drive setup needs compatible truck and mount geometry, a motor shaft and pulley interface, a wheel pulley and belt arrangement, and electrical parts that support the motor. The battery voltage, ESC, wiring, wheel clearance, and available mounting space also need checking.

Before buying conversion parts, identify the board model and inspect those interfaces. If the mount, truck, wheel, or electronics are not compatible, a motor-only swap will not solve the mismatch. The available product specifications do not establish that a particular hub board can be converted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose without relying on a “best motor” ranking
- Choose a compatible replacement first: match the original system’s electrical ratings and physical interfaces before considering a different motor specification.
- Compare the whole drive setup: for belt drive, include the mount, pulleys, belt, and wheel; for hub or direct drive, confirm the wheel and truck interface and replacement options.
- Use manufacturer numbers carefully: distinguish rated battery range, test voltage, maximum output, and highest-efficiency-point output rather than treating them as equivalent measures.
- Do not infer a winner from KV or peak watts alone: neither number establishes the speed, suitability, or overall quality of a complete board setup.
The cited sources establish product-specific specifications and general compatibility guidance, but no independent population statistic or controlled cross-brand test that supports naming one motor as the fastest or best overall.
