Elden Ring Version 1.17 is a free base-game update, but the new classes and other additional content in the Tarnished Pack are paid DLC unless included with Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2. Bandai Namco’s patch notes, published August 27, 2026, list gameplay adjustments, PvP-specific changes and bug fixes, and say the update is required for online play.
What’s in Elden Ring update 1.17?
Bandai Namco lists Version 1.17 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. The notes describe support for the Tarnished Pack alongside gameplay balance adjustments and bug fixes. They do not report player-count or performance statistics.

After installing the update, check the title screen: it should show App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17. Bandai Namco’s Version 1.17 patch notes state that the update is required for online play.
Free gameplay and PvP balance changes
General gameplay adjustments
The notes list improvements to the parry performance of Parry, Storm Wall and Thops’s Barrier, alongside changes affecting several sorceries, incantations, shields and weapons. These are balance adjustments; the notes do not describe them as new classes or equipment.

PvP-exclusive adjustments
These changes apply specifically to player-versus-player combat:
- Rakshasa’s Great Katana causes its user to take more damage while attacking.
- Rugalea’s Roar has reduced power against other players.
- Rotten Breath and Ekzykes’s Decay reduce the time other players are immobilized by hit reactions.
Bug fixes in Version 1.17
- Fixed an issue with Great Katana critical-hit power against large enemies.
- Fixed a bug that allowed Great Katana jumping attacks to be parried.
- On PC, fixed mouse camera control during NPC dialogue.
- On PC, fixed an issue with resetting keyboard and mouse settings.
What requires the paid Tarnished Pack?
The patch notes say the listed additional content is added upon purchase of the Tarnished Pack. That content includes Idus Knight and Heavy Knight as starting classes, equipment and weapons, and associated balance changes. These additions should not be confused with the free base-game patch. Bandai Namco notes that the Tarnished Pack content is included by default in ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2.

- Install the available game update on a listed platform.
- Open Elden Ring and look at the title screen.
- Confirm that it displays App Ver. 1.17 and Regulation Ver. 1.17.
