Its striking presentation and emotional ambition drew strong praise from some reviewers, while others found that the reaction tests could crowd out build strategy. That split makes it most appealing to players who want both character-driven storytelling and hands-on combat—not just traditional menu-based battles.
What kind of RPG is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
Sandfall Interactive’s debut role-playing game, published by Kepler Interactive, takes place in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. Gustave, Maelle and their fellow Expeditioners set out to end the Paintress’s cycle of death, a premise built around the expedition’s members facing a limited time to live. The official game overview introduces the setup without requiring familiarity with the story.

The game combines party-based RPG choices with real-time execution. There are six playable characters, and players shape them through gear, stats and skills, with character synergies adding another layer to party construction. The official description also highlights free-aim attacks against enemy weak points, rhythm-based attack chains, and the ability to dodge, parry and counter. In practice, liking turn-based RPGs is not by itself a reliable guide to whether this combat will suit you: you also need to be willing to read enemy actions and respond on time.
How does the combat feel?
Combat’s defining tension is between planning and timing. Turn-based choices leave room to consider attacks and builds, but incoming enemy moves ask for real-time defensive input. Correctly reading an attack and responding can make battles feel active and personal; missing a dodge or parry can make the encounter feel less like a test of party setup and more like a test of learning an animation.

- Reactive Turn-based Combat: Craft unique builds for your Expeditioners that fit your playstyle via gear, stats, skills, and &character synergies
- Dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free aim system
- With only one year left to live, join Gustave, Maelle, & fellow Expeditioners as they embark on a desperate quest to break Paintress’ cycle of death
- Explore an enchanting realm populated by adversaries; Wander through breathtaking landscapes, from Island of Visages to the Forgotten Battlefield
- Experience the debut game from Sandfall Interactive, fully realized in Unreal Engine 5 with stunning graphics and a heartbreaking soundtrack
That balance is the game’s clearest dividing line. Players who enjoy reacting to telegraphed attacks alongside making tactical choices may find the system more engaging than a fully menu-driven battle loop. Those who prefer RPG fights to be decided mainly by party composition, equipment and turn selection may find the defensive demands tiring, particularly when a mistake is costly.
What reviewers praised—and where they disagreed
The difference in critical response is less about whether the game has a distinctive identity than about how well its combat supports that identity. GameSpot’s Richard Wakeling awarded it 9/10 in an April 22, 2025 review, praising its emotionally engaging story, distinct party members and synergies, memorable boss fights, visual variety, and blend of strategy with reactive action. He also reported less interesting traversal and quality-of-life frustrations, including no side-objective tracking and no way to compare weapons in shops. Wakeling said he completed the game in 29 hours while doing some additional side content; that is his reported playthrough, not a general completion-time estimate. Read GameSpot’s review.

PC Gamer’s Justin Wagner gave the game 70/100 in an April 23, 2025 review. He praised the setting, performances, soundtrack and atmosphere, but argued that the emphasis on real-time dodging and parrying could overwhelm the build strategy. In his experience, missed dodges were heavily punished, and learning enemy animations and parrying often felt more decisive than changing builds. Wagner estimated a roughly 20-hour main run, another reviewer-specific report rather than a promise about how long the game takes. His review’s summary described it as “a stylish riff on the JRPG, but its real-time-infused combat is rarely as fun as it looks.” Read PC Gamer’s review.
Those reactions point to a useful fit test rather than a universal verdict: if story, character performances, art direction and timed combat are all part of the appeal, the game’s strengths may reinforce one another. If you mainly want to solve fights through builds and menus, the same combat design may become an obstacle.

- Engaging Storyline: Dive into a rich, narrative-driven adventure with unexpected twists.
- Complex Puzzles: Test your problem-solving skills with challenging puzzles.
- Immersive World: Explore a visually stunning alien planet with breathtaking details and treacherous terrain.
Presentation, exploration and quality of life
The Belle Époque-inspired fantasy setting gives the adventure a clear visual identity, while the soundtrack and performances were among the elements PC Gamer singled out for praise. GameSpot also highlighted visual variety and dramatic boss encounters. The game’s emotional tone and presentation are central to its appeal, not merely decoration around the combat.
Exploration is a less consistent strength in the reviews considered here. GameSpot’s assessment called traversal less interesting and noted practical omissions: the game does not track side objectives, and shop menus do not let you compare weapons. These details matter if you like keeping a checklist of optional tasks or comparing equipment before spending resources. They do not erase the strengths reviewers saw in the story, characters and set pieces, but they can make moving through the adventure and managing gear less convenient.

That announcement documents the formats, not their current stock or availability. A huge thank you to Sandfall Interactive and Laced for making these releases a reality, and to Nicholas Maxson-Francombe for creating all the beautiful musical artwork on the sleeves.” See Sandfall’s soundtrack announcement.
Reception and lasting significance
The game’s success has extended beyond review scores. Sandfall Interactive reported 5 million copies sold worldwide and more than 333 million soundtrack track streams in an announcement dated October 8, 2025; these are figures from that announcement, not current totals. Read the sales announcement.
GameSpot reported that the game received nine awards from thirteen nominations at The Game Awards 2025, including Game of the Year. GamesRadar+ ranked it first in its editorial list of the 25 best games of 2025. Those are distinct forms of recognition—an award tally reported by GameSpot and a publication’s annual ranking, respectively—not measures of how every player will respond to the combat.
