The cutscene tied to Destiny 2: The Final Shape is the cinematic bridge unlocked by the Year 6 closing mission, Closer to the Heart. It follows Crow’s passage through the portal into the Traveler and hands the story off to the expansion campaign. It is not accurate to call it Destiny 2’s latest cutscene today: later story content followed, and Bungie ended planned live-service content updates in June 2026.
Which cutscene sets up The Final Shape?
On May 23, 2024, Bungie described Closer to the Heart as the mission that closes Year 6 and unlocks a cinematic bridge between Season of the Wish and The Final Shape. The immediate handoff is Crow crossing the portal into the Traveler, following the bargain with Riven during the season. Bungie’s announcement identifies the mission and its role in the transition.
That makes the scene a lead-in, not a summary of the expansion. It establishes how the pursuit moves from Crow’s passage into the Traveler to the campaign’s confrontation with the Witness.
What does the expansion campaign follow?
In its June 4, 2024 launch article, Bungie said that the Guardian, the Vanguard, and their allies pursue the Witness through the heart of the Traveler to thwart its plans. The campaign takes place in the Pale Heart, an interior landscape shaped by the Traveler’s history that changes as the story unfolds. The Witness seeks to calcify reality into its own design; the cinematic bridge points toward that conflict but does not reveal the campaign’s full events. Is this really Destiny 2’s latest cutscene?
No—not as a present-day claim. The bridge is a 2024 cinematic, and Bungie later published additional Year of The Final Shape story cinematics. On May 21, 2026, Bungie announced that the June 9, 2026 update would be Destiny 2’s final planned live-service content update. Bungie said the game would remain playable; its post-update support guidance says planned live-service updates have ended with Update 9.7.0, while leaving open the possibility of a future stability hotfix. Those service announcements date the game’s planned content, but they do not establish which individual cinematic was the last one released. Watching archived cinematics and playing the campaign offer different context: an archive can show story scenes, while the in-game campaign supplies the missions and surrounding play. Bungie’s October 30, 2025 archive update documents the availability of Year of The Final Shape cinematics in video form. For the campaign itself, Bungie’s launch overview describes its story and setting. Bungie also documented a Collector’s Edition among the expansion editions in its Final Shape guide; that does not confirm current retailer stock or regional availability.
