Sony stated that the console is sold without a disc drive. The announced package includes a 2TB SSD and one DualSense wireless controller; Astro’s Playroom is pre-installed. Owners who want to use physical discs can add Sony’s Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 separately. The announcement did not include that drive in the console price.
What’s different about the PS5 Pro?
Sony’s central pitch was better image quality and performance in games that support Pro enhancements. It described three hardware and rendering changes:
- More GPU capacity: Sony said the GPU has 67% more compute units than the current PS5, with memory that is 28% faster. It said these changes enable up to 45% faster game rendering. These are Sony’s figures, not independently measured results.
- More capable ray tracing: Sony said the system can cast ray-tracing rays at double, and sometimes triple, the speed of the current PS5.
- PSSR upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses machine-learning technology to upscale images, with the aim of improving clarity.
Sony’s current UK product page describes supported titles running at 60fps or up to 120fps, with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output when connected to a 4K TV. That describes potential supported-game configurations, not a guarantee that every title will achieve those settings together. Sony explicitly says PS5 Pro features vary by game.
The console also supports variable refresh rate (VRR), 8K gaming, and Wi-Fi 7 in territories where that wireless standard is supported. Sony said the user interface and network services remain the same as on PS5.

PS5 Pro plays PS5 games, and Sony says it supports more than 8,500 PS4 games. Its Game Boost feature may improve or stabilize performance in supported PS5 and PS4 titles; Sony also describes Enhanced Image Quality for select PS4 games. These are Sony’s compatibility and feature statements, not a guarantee of improved performance in every game.
Sony says existing PS5 accessories are compatible, including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore. The console’s disc-less design is the main practical difference for anyone who owns or buys games on disc.
What did Sony say the PS5 Pro was for?
“With PlayStation 5 Pro, we wanted to make sure that the most dedicated gamers, as well as game creators, could utilize the most advanced console technology, taking the PlayStation 5 experience even farther,”
