Dragon’s Dogma 2 made a strong case for pre-release character creation: its free PS5 creator let players design both the Arisen and Main Pawn, save multiple versions, and transfer their character data into the full game. More RPGs should offer that kind of head start—but only when the designs carry over, rather than leaving players to rebuild them after launch.
What Dragon’s Dogma 2’s pre-release creator offered
Capcom released Dragon’s Dogma 2 Character Creator & Storage on the US PlayStation Store as a free PS5 demo on March 8, 2024. The full game followed on March 22. The cited store listing is specifically for PS5; it does not by itself establish the creator app’s availability on every platform where the game launched.
- Players could customize the appearance of their Arisen and the appearance and inclination of their Main Pawn.
- The app could store up to five Arisen and five Main Pawns, giving players room to try different designs.
- Character data created in the app could be transferred to the separately available base game.
Capcom’s showcase recap also highlighted human and beastren characters and the use of photogrammetry. It described creation as something players could approach intuitively or work through in detail, but did not publish a full technical inventory of creator controls. See PlayStation Blog’s November 28, 2023 showcase recap.
Why the transfer matters more than the preview
A character creator released early can be a fun preview, but it becomes a useful part of the game when the work survives the transition to launch. Dragon’s Dogma 2’s store listing explicitly says the created data can be transferred. Players can settle on a look beforehand, experiment with alternatives, and avoid spending the opening session repeating character setup.

- LIMITLESS REPLAYABILITY: This HeroQuest tabletop board game is for 2-5 players, ages 14 and up. The game comes with 14 quests, and players can also create their own stories and build their own quests
The same idea applies to the Main Pawn. Preparing this companion’s look and inclination extends the creator beyond the protagonist, while staying focused on the specific companion the game identifies—not party-wide customization. It gives players an early chance to shape a character who will accompany them, rather than treating the player avatar as the only design that matters.
Five saved slots for each character type add practical support for experimentation. Players can preserve competing concepts instead of overwriting one design while deciding what fits. That does not establish how often players used the feature, but it shows how a pre-launch tool can accommodate indecision and iteration.

What would make pre-release creators an RPG standard?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a useful case for the argument, not proof of an industry consensus. Whether another RPG should follow the model depends on how well its tool serves the actual game and its players. These are useful criteria for judging the feature:
- Lead time: Is the tool available early enough for players to use it before launch?
- Continuity: Can saved designs transfer into the full game without rebuilding them?
- Scope: Does it cover the player character and any especially important companion, or only a limited preview?
- Iteration: Can players save more than one concept and revisit their choices?
- Access and parity: Is the tool free, and is it available on the platforms where the game launches?
- Player value: Does it meaningfully save setup time or let players enjoy a part of the game before launch?
Transfer is the hinge. Without it, an early creator risks creating duplicate work; with it, character creation becomes part of the pre-release experience and launch-day preparation. A tool need not copy Dragon’s Dogma 2’s exact slot count or companion options, but it should make clear what carries over and ensure saved creations fit the final game.

A useful precedent, not a sales claim
Capcom described the free creator as part of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s global promotional activities. The publisher reported more than 2.5 million units sold worldwide by April 2, 2024, but did not quantify any effect the creator had on sales. The sales figure is context for how Capcom characterized the app, not evidence that it caused the game’s commercial performance. See Capcom’s April 2, 2024 announcement.
The broader design case does not require a sales claim. A transferable creator can give players more agency over their arrival in a role-playing world, let them work through design choices on their own schedule, and reduce setup friction when the game begins. Dragon’s Dogma 2’s free, pre-launch tool demonstrates those benefits in a concrete way. Its example supports calling the feature worth adopting where it can be integrated cleanly—not declaring that every RPG must offer it regardless of cost, platform constraints, or game design.

- In Dreams is a slightly surreal storytelling game for one, which uses vivid imagery and evocative prompts to immerse you in a dreamworld you wouldn’t have otherwise imagined.
- In this storytelling solo game, the player writes a story in which a character in a dreamworld must complete a specific goal before waking. The player begins by drawing cards to create a randomized character with a starting temperament. Card draws will also determine the goal the character must achieve by the dream's end in order for the player to win.
- Storytelling then begins by drawings cards to create an Encounter. An Encounter consists of 2-4 short prompts as well as a location. All Encounter cards include surreal artwork to help inspire fresh and creative interpretations each game. The player must immediately write about the generated Encounter, including all of the prompts and the location while attempting to move the character closer to their goal.
- Some Encounters will prompt the player to generate an Event. Two cards from the Event deck will determine what is happening as well as the tone. These cards too include surreal artwork for inspiration. Events are resolved in the same manner as Encounters.
- The game continues, with the player drawing and resolving Encounters and Events through storytelling until the character's goal is met.
