Hades II keeps the original’s most compelling ingredients—quick, responsive fights and the thrill of turning Olympian boons into a powerful build—but layers on enough progression systems and prerequisites to make the experience feel less clear. The review’s verdict is strongly positive about the play itself, while questioning whether all that extra complexity makes this sequel better.
What is Hades II about?
Hades II is a roguelike action game starring Melinoë, a witch who fights the Titan of Time and seeks to rescue her family. Supergiant Games describes it as a game in which players “battle beyond the Underworld of Greek myth using dark sorcery to take on the sinister Titan of Time” (Supergiant Games’ v1.0 announcement).

Like the first Hades, it is built around repeated runs through changing chambers. You fight enemies, choose temporary boons from the gods, and return to a hub when a run ends. The sequel changes the protagonist and conflict, but preserves that recognizable rhythm.
How does Hades II compare with the original?
| What matters | Hades | Hades II |
|---|---|---|
| Combat and builds | The original establishes room-to-room combat and boon-driven runs. | The review praises responsive combat and the excitement of finding strong boon combinations. |
| Progression between runs | The review uses the original’s cleaner-feeling formula as its point of comparison. | It adds Arcana and mastery progression, gathered resources, crafting, and other systems the reviewer finds harder to keep track of. |
| Routes and novelty | The original is the baseline for the familiar run structure. | An additional aboveground route and new systems broaden the sequel, but the review questions whether that added scope provides enough benefit to returning players. |
| Story and presentation | The first game’s characters and mythic setting are the continuity point. | Melinoë and the conflict with Chronos give the sequel a new focus; the review praises its striking art and Darren Korb’s music. |
This is a critical comparison, not a controlled test or an objective measure of complexity. The review’s complaint is about design density and sequel purpose, not that Hades II is a poor game.

Is Hades 2 too complicated?
It can feel that way, according to the review. Beyond the action, the game asks players to engage with systems and materials including Arcana cards, Ashes, Psyche, Grasp and mastery, weapon-unlocking materials, Cauldron recipes, summoned vendors and characters, seeds and farming, and requirements for opening another route. The reviewer’s central concern is that these named resources and prerequisites can become a dense web to manage.
That reaction is subjective: the review does not establish a universal barrier or give a measured count of the game’s systems. Players who enjoy tracking unlocks and planning long-term progression may find the layers rewarding; players who want the original’s more immediately legible loop may find them distracting.

What does the review praise?
Combat and build-making
The strongest case for the sequel is the moment-to-moment play. The review describes combat as finely tuned and responsive, and the varied boon combinations make each run a chance to discover a different synergy. Its new witchcraft actions and charged variations add to the combat vocabulary.
Art and music
The review also highlights the environments and soundtrack as major strengths. Supergiant says the completed game includes just under four hours of music; that is a soundtrack-length figure, not an estimate of how long the game takes to finish (Supergiant Games’ v1.0 announcement).

Is Hades 2 worth playing if you loved Hades?
The review’s answer is broadly yes, with a qualification: Hades II remains exceptionally engaging when you are fighting and shaping a run, but its extra progression layers may frustrate players who valued the original’s cleaner structure. Its new protagonist, witchcraft, and aboveground route offer novelty, though the reviewer is not convinced that every added system earns its complexity.
In other words, this is a strong sequel whose main argument is not that it has lost the original’s appeal, but that it sometimes obscures that appeal beneath more things to track.
