Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is now Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The game launched on March 20, 2025, after Ubisoft changed its original November 15, 2024 date. It is no longer an upcoming release: Ubisoft described a June 2026 content drop as the game’s final update.
What is Assassin’s Creed Codename Red called now?
Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed Codename RED on September 10, 2022, as a flagship project set in feudal Japan and developed by Ubisoft Quebec. In May 2024, Ubisoft revealed its final name: Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
The codename was a working title, not a separate game. If you are looking for Codename Red today, search for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
When did Assassin’s Creed Shadows come out?
Assassin’s Creed Shadows was released on March 20, 2025. Ubisoft initially announced November 15, 2024, then changed the date in January 2025, saying the additional time would allow the team to implement feedback and further refine and polish the game. Ubisoft’s release notice stated: “Accordingly, the new release date is March 20, 2025.”

- September 10, 2022: Ubisoft announced Codename RED and its feudal Japan setting; that announcement did not give a release date.

- January 2025: Ubisoft revised the date to March 20, 2025.
- June 2026: Ubisoft described a new content drop as the game’s final update.
What is the game about?
Ubisoft describes Assassin’s Creed Shadows as an open-world adventure in late Sengoku-era Japan, with two playable protagonists: Naoe, a shinobi Assassin, and Yasuke, a samurai. The publisher highlights changing seasons and weather, along with environments that react to the world. Those are Ubisoft’s descriptions of the game rather than independent assessments.
Post-launch story content
In June 2026, Ubisoft said the final update added a story arc and Domains challenges. Associate Game Director Simon described the “Black Tides” story capper as “about two hours of content” wrapping up Naoe and Yasuke’s adventure. That is Ubisoft’s approximate estimate, not a measured playtime guarantee.

- Mac App Store, for Macs with Apple silicon
- Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store
These routes are not interchangeable: a console disc or digital edition, a PC store listing, a Mac version, cloud access, and a subscription offer have different requirements and terms. Check the current listing for your platform and region before purchasing or subscribing.

Are physical editions available?
Ubisoft’s 2024 announcement said Standard Editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X would be sold physically at participating retailers. Its current game page also describes a Collector’s Edition with physical items and names The Complete Official Guide Assassin’s Creed Shadows by Piggyback. Retail stock and edition availability can change, so confirm the specific retailer listing before ordering.
