Warner Bros. Games announced on July 22, 2024, that it had acquired Player First Games, the studio behind MultiVersus. The publisher said co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White would continue leading the studio; it did not disclose the purchase price. The acquisition brought an existing development partner in-house, but it did not ensure the game would remain online indefinitely: MultiVersus later ended online service after its final season in 2025.
What did Warner Bros. Games acquire?
Warner Bros. Games acquired Player First Games, the development studio that made MultiVersus. Its announcement described the deal as an acquisition of the studio, not a separate purchase of the game as a named asset. The publisher said Player First Games would continue operating under co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White, who would report to Carlos Barbosa, then Warner Bros. Games’ vice president and studio head. The purchase price was not disclosed. Warner Bros. Games’ acquisition announcement
Why did Warner Bros. Games acquire Player First Games?
The publisher pointed to an established working relationship: it said it had worked with Player First Games for several years to create and launch MultiVersus. The acquisition integrated that development team with the publisher. Huynh said that integration was “optimum for the players.” That is the companies’ stated rationale; the announcement did not provide deal economics or establish other motives or outcomes.
What happened to MultiVersus after the acquisition?
Launch and acquisition timeline

Warner Bros. Games later announced that Season 5, which ran from February 4 to May 30, 2025, would be the game’s final season. Real-money transactions ended January 31, 2025. After May 30, online play and new downloads through PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store ended, according to the official Season 5 FAQ. The sources establish this later service decision, but do not say the acquisition caused it.

As of the end of Season 5, the game was no longer available for online play or new downloads through the named storefronts. Offline local play is a separate case: the FAQ says players who installed the latest version and logged in during Season 5 could play locally afterward, including with up to four players, or use training mode. The FAQ also says players who deleted the game before Season 5 ended could reinstall it afterward. So the end of online service did not mean every previous player necessarily lost access to reinstall or play offline; it does mean new players should not expect to obtain the game through those storefronts.
