Mojang names bedrock, obsidian, spawners, jukeboxes, portal frames, and sculk blocks as examples. The examples are not a complete cross-edition inventory: piston behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock and between versions.
Which blocks can’t sticky pistons pull?
Mojang’s July 2025 sticky-piston guide gives these examples of blocks that cannot be moved by sticky pistons:
- Bedrock
- Obsidian
- Spawner blocks
- Jukeboxes
- Portal frames
- Blocks made of sculk
These are examples, not a definitive list for every block in every edition. Mojang’s earlier piston guide also names command blocks and End portals as blocks pistons cannot push. The exact behavior for a block should be checked against the edition and version you play.
Why a piston may not pull a block
“Can’t be pulled” can describe different outcomes. A block may be immovable, movable only in one direction of piston action, or fragile enough to break when pushed. Mojang says that many fragile blocks—including plants, eggs, and redstone circuitry—break when pushed; they are not simply examples of immovable blocks.

A regular piston pushes blocks when it extends. A sticky piston can also pull the block touching its head when it retracts, but only if that block is pullable. Mojang notes that some blocks can be pushed but not pulled, so a successful push does not guarantee that the sticky piston will bring the same block back.
How the 12-block limit and slime or honey affect movement
A piston can push up to 12 blocks in a row. That is a limit on how many blocks it can move in a push, not a list of which blocks are movable. If a contraption tries to move more than 12 blocks, its size may be the problem even when the individual blocks are eligible.
Slime and honey blocks can carry adjacent blocks along when moved, which can make a piston contraption move a group rather than a single block. These grouping behaviors do not make an immovable block movable, and the piston’s movement limit still applies. Mojang’s Java Snapshot 19W41A notes honey’s behavior of attempting to move adjacent blocks like slime: snapshot notes.

How to troubleshoot a sticky piston that will not pull
- Identify your edition and version. Note whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and the game version, because piston behavior is not identical across versions.
- Check the block’s behavior. Determine whether it is immovable, pushable but not pullable, or fragile and likely to break when pushed. Mojang’s named examples include bedrock, obsidian, spawners, jukeboxes, portal frames, and sculk blocks.
- Check the arrangement’s size. If the piston is pushing a group, count the blocks it must move and check that the push does not exceed 12.
- Test the group separately. Slime and honey can carry adjacent blocks, but the result still depends on each block’s movement behavior and the piston limit.
For Bedrock custom blocks, Microsoft’s movement component documentation defines movement types including push_pull, push, popped, and immovable. In that creator-facing system, immovable means the block is unaffected by a piston; it does not establish a single configuration table for all vanilla blocks in both editions.
