In a game-ROM filename, “Rev 1” usually marks a release revision made after the game’s initial version. The label alone does not say what changed, and it is not a reliable synonym for “version 1.1.” To learn whether a particular revision fixes a bug, alters content, or affects compatibility, you need information about that specific game and release.
What “Rev 1” usually means in a game-ROM filename
“Rev” is short for “revision.” In the context of a game release, “Rev 1” generally indicates that the ROM represents a revised release rather than the initial one. It is a label for the release’s revision, not a description of the changes.
There is no universal change list encoded in the tag. A revision might fix a problem, change content, or reflect another alteration to the release. A filename by itself cannot tell you which of those happened.
What the label does not tell you
- It does not identify the changes. The label is not a substitute for title-specific release notes or preservation records.
- It does not guarantee a bug fix. Revisions can alter or remove content as well as correct problems.
- It does not mean “version 1.1.” That may be an informal comparison, but “Rev 1” is not a dependable conversion to a numbered software version.
- It does not tell you which release is best. A newer revision may suit one purpose, while someone who prefers the original content or needs compatibility with a particular patch or achievement set may choose differently.
Check what is being revised
“ROM” can mean game data, but read-only memory and firmware also use revision labels. The phrase “Rev 1” alone does not establish that a game release is involved.

For example, NXP’s June 3, 2021 i.MX RT1170 change notice describes a reference manual updated to Rev 1 and errata updated to Rev 1.2. Those are document revisions, not game releases. MAME’s Atari System 1 driver separately labels BIOS options for TTL motherboards Rev 1 and Rev 2—hardware-related labels, not revisions of a commercial game.

If you have a particular game in mind, treat “Rev 1” as a clue to investigate rather than a verdict about the release. Compare the exact game and region, then check the revision identifier and any title-specific documentation or preservation records.

- Identify the exact release. Record the game title, region, and revision shown in the filename or catalog entry. Similar filenames may refer to different regional releases.
- Look for documented changes. Consult title-specific release notes or preservation records. Do not assume a bug fix—or any other specific change—without documentation.
- Check your intended use. Confirm compatibility with the emulator, patch, or achievement set you plan to use.
- Decide whether the differences matter to you. If a revision changed or removed content, your preference may depend on whether you want the revised release or the original one.
Without the specific game and a source documenting its release history, the exact differences cannot be established. There is no basis for saying that one revision is universally superior.
