There is no verified official winner: Epic has not published comparable ownership counts for Fortnite outfits. Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper are famous early examples, but both returned to the OG Season Shop in late 2024 and January 2025. Their special Black & Gold styles are a separate case, reserved for players who bought the outfits in 2017.
Why there is no definitive rarest skin
“Rarest” can mean different things: the fewest accounts own an outfit, it was available for only a short time, it came from a limited promotion, or a particular style is restricted to a historical group of owners. Those measures can point to different items. Epic’s cited announcements do not provide ownership totals, so no outfit can be verified as the least-owned on that basis.
Published rankings are editorial choices, not official account-count data. Pro Game Guides included Renegade Raider, Aerial Assault Trooper and iKONIK in its December 2025 list, while Charlie INTEL had called Aerial Assault Trooper the rarest in 2024. The different judgments illustrate why a ranking needs a stated criterion; neither establishes a measured winner.
What changed for Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper
These outfits are often associated with Chapter 1 Season 1, but their original outfits were not limited to the first wave of 2017 buyers forever. Epic announced that they would return in the OG Season Shop, which ran from December 20, 2024, through January 30, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET. The shop required XP earned in Fortnite experiences: Epic listed 1,000,000 XP for Aerial Assault Trooper and 1,500,000 XP for Renegade Raider. The Black & Gold styles are a separate rarity question
Epic says the Black & Gold style variations for Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper require having purchased the outfits when they were originally released in 2017. That eligibility rule distinguishes the legacy styles from the outfits themselves: a later buyer could obtain a returning outfit during the OG Season Shop window, but Epic’s guidance does not make that buyer eligible for the styles. How to judge a rarity claim
- Ownership: Ask whether the claim is based on accounts that own the outfit. No comparable official count for the leading candidates is established here.
- Availability: Check the outfit’s release history and whether Epic later brought it back. A return changes the case for calling an outfit exclusive to its original release.
- Style eligibility: Separate a restricted variant from the base outfit. The 2017 purchase condition applies to the Black & Gold styles, not to every version of the outfits.
- Promotion or event: Device, tournament or other limited distributions may be relevant, but a limited distribution alone does not prove a skin has the fewest owners. A reliable comparison would need consistent ownership data.
So, which Fortnite skin is the rarest?
The evidence supports no single verified answer for 2025. Renegade Raider and Aerial Assault Trooper remain notable OG outfits, while their Black & Gold styles have a documented 2017-purchase restriction. Treat lists naming either outfit—or another candidate such as iKONIK—as editorial rankings unless they provide comparable ownership figures and explain how rarity is measured.
