The first version was released for PC in 2009, and the full version, known as Minecraft 1.0, followed in 2011. Official Minecraft sources give these years but not an exact day and month, so the answer is best stated as a year for each milestone.
Which year counts as the release?
Both years are correct, because they mark different milestones. The 2009 date refers to the first playable version, released for PC players. The 2011 date refers to the full version, which Mojang’s anniversary material calls Minecraft 1.0. If you are answering a quick question, give both years and name the milestone each one belongs to.

Release timeline at a glance
| Milestone | Year | Platform and wording | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| First version | 2009 | Released for PC players | Minecraft’s official overview page, “What is Minecraft? Discover the World of Minecraft.” |
| Full version (Minecraft 1.0) | 2011 | Described as the “full version” release | The official overview page, and the Minecraft 15th Anniversary timeline, which uses the label Minecraft 1.0 |
What the official sources say
The overview page states: “The first version of Minecraft was released in 2009 for PC players, with the full version releasing in 2011.” The anniversary timeline, published by Minecraft and Mojang under the title “Minecraft 15th Anniversary,” places the arrival of Minecraft 1.0 under 2011 with the line “Minecraft 1.0 is finally released.”
Neither source gives the day or month of either release. Any article that names an exact date for the 2009 or 2011 milestone is going beyond what these official pages establish.

Why searches show different years
Search results often list 2009 because it marks the game’s first public appearance on PC. Others list 2011 because that is when the game reached its full 1.0 version. Neither is a mistake. The confusion comes from treating “release” as a single event when Minecraft’s history has an early version followed by a full launch.
How to phrase the answer
- Use “first released in 2009 for PC” when you mean the original version.
- Use “full version released in 2011” or “Minecraft 1.0 in 2011” when you mean the complete game.
- Avoid giving a month or day unless you have a dated source that names it directly.
Sources used
- Minecraft (Mojang), “What is Minecraft? Discover the World of Minecraft,” the official overview page, for the 2009 first version and the 2011 full version.
- Minecraft (Mojang), “Minecraft 15th Anniversary,” the official timeline, for the Minecraft 1.0 milestone under 2011.
If you are writing for a general audience, the short version is enough: Minecraft arrived on PC in 2009 and reached its full 1.0 release in 2011.
