Arthur Morgan dies at the end of Chapter 6, during the final story mission, “Red Dead Redemption.” The exact moment and the scene around it depend on two things: Arthur’s honor level and the choice you make during the escape. The game then continues into an Epilogue played as John Marston.
Where Arthur’s death happens in the story
Arthur’s death closes Chapter 6 and ends the main Arthur storyline. It does not end the game. The Epilogue that follows is playable as John Marston, and it is where the story resolves for him. Unofficial fan guides agree on this structure, including RDR2.org’s endings guide by Matt Gibbs (published January 7, 2019, updated November 6, 2023) and the iRedDead story mission walkthrough by TreeFitty (published December 7, 2018, updated January 4, 2019).

The choice that shapes the final scene
During the final mission, John tells Arthur that the gang’s stashed money has been left behind. Arthur then has to decide whether to go back for it or to help John get away. Either decision leads to the Epilogue. What changes is the confrontation and the way Arthur dies, and that is where honor comes in.

Honor and the final choice combine into four versions of the ending. The guides describe each one as follows:

The high-honor, help-John version is the one most often described, but it is one possible outcome rather than the only ending. Because the variants differ in the final confrontation, a player who wants to see a specific version should track both honor and the choice before the mission begins.
How honor affects Arthur
Honor is a system that runs through the whole game, and the guides say it shapes how Arthur reacts to learning he has tuberculosis and how he sees events in later sequences. Rockstar Games’ official Newswire article on honor confirms that the game includes an honor system. The version of that article available for this check did not provide readable text, so the specific effects on the ending are established by the fan guides rather than by Rockstar’s own description.

Can Arthur be saved?
Neither choice in the final mission keeps Arthur alive. Both the help-John and return-for-money paths end with his death, so the decision changes how he dies and what happens to John, not whether Arthur survives Chapter 6.
