Grumpy’s hideout key is a barter from Ref at loyalty level 2, costing one Lega Medal and 100 GP coins. It opens a room in the power station on Interchange, next to the ULTRA mall.
How to get Grumpy’s key from Ref
Grumpy’s key, usually shortened to “Grumpy” in player chat, is offered by the trader Ref once your loyalty level with him reaches 2. The Escape from Tarkov community wiki lists the barter as one Lega Medal plus 100 GP coins. The wiki page for the key was last indexed about three months before this article was written, so check Ref’s trade list in your current client before you plan a run around it. Trader offers can change between wipes and patches.
Because the trade is a barter rather than a purchase, you need both materials in your stash at the moment you complete it. Missing either one means the offer will not go through.
Where the key is used on Interchange
The key opens the hideout room in the power station on Interchange, beside the ULTRA mall. Head to that building to find the door it unlocks. A community reference on the Japanese Escape from Tarkov wiki (wikiwiki.jp), last modified on October 3, 2026, lists five uses for the key. The count is taken from that page and has not been checked against a developer source, so treat it as the community’s current tally rather than an official figure.

What the key can and cannot do
- Flea market: The English wiki states the key cannot be listed on the flea market. You can only use it yourself or keep it.
- In-game description: “A key that unlocks the room located at the power station next to the ULTRA mall. Belonged to one of the Arena gladiators by the name “Grumpy”.” This text appears in the item’s description in the game and is the only lore the key carries.
Loot that may be in the room
The same community reference describes the room’s possible contents. These are possibilities, not guaranteed rewards, and they are not a loot-value promise:
- A duffel bag
- One or two jackets
- Possible key spawns, including a TerraGroup Labs Green keycard and an RB-MP21 key
- A range of possible weapons and equipment
Because spawns are random, a single visit may yield none of these. Plan your raid around the door and the five-use count, and treat anything you find inside as a bonus.

No official Battlestate Games item page for this key was located for this article, so the barter cost and room location rest on community wiki entries. The fastest check is in-game: open Ref’s trade list and confirm the Lega Medal and 100 GP coin cost before you gather materials. If you want a map tool to plan your route through Interchange, TarkovBox is an unofficial fan site that lists maps and keys tools, and it is optional. You do not need it to obtain or use the key.
Once you have the key and the room is unlocked, the in-game location and the wiki’s five-use listing are the references to keep in mind for future raids.
