You unlock Viper by completing the quest Enter the Viper. The quest is offered by the Worried Weaver in Ul’dah – Steps of Nald, and you need a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job at level 80 or higher to take it. Viper itself has no base class and begins at level 80 once unlocked.
Who can take the Enter the Viper quest
The quest requirement is set by the job you are playing, not by the Viper job. Official listings specify a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job at level 80. Limited jobs do not meet that requirement, according to the Eorzea Database entry for the quest (displayed as of Patch 7.56).
- Eligible: any Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job at level 80 or higher.
- Not eligible: limited jobs, which the database excludes from the eligible category.
- Viper’s own level: you do not need to have Viper at level 80 to start the quest. Viper begins at level 80 after the unlock.
Step-by-step: unlocking Viper
- Switch to a Disciple of War or Disciple of Magic job that is at level 80 or higher. Check the level on your character’s job list before you travel.
- Teleport to Ul’dah – Steps of Nald. Locate the Worried Weaver at coordinates X:9.3 Y:9.2.
- Speak to the Worried Weaver, accept Enter the Viper, and complete it.
- When the quest finishes, Viper is unlocked. It starts at level 80, so you can begin leveling it immediately.
What the sources do and do not establish
The Patch 7.0 Notes from Square Enix list the quest requirement as “Disciple of War or Magic level 80” and the location as “Ul’dah – Steps of Nald (X:9.3 Y:9.2)”. The Eorzea Database entry confirms the quest name and the level requirement. Together they establish the quest, the job-level requirement, the quest giver’s location, and Viper’s starting level.
They do not address whether a particular edition, platform, service account, or trial account can take the quest. If you are unsure about account eligibility, check the official Final Fantasy XIV site rather than assuming a purchase is required. The official Viper job guide, which Square Enix publishes separately, is at https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/jobguide/viper/.
