Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallPick the school that matches the first kind of play you want to learn: close-quarters melee, control and manipulation, scouting and stealth, firearms, or gathering and exploration. The schools are designed to be mixed, so a first choice you later regret is not a dead end, but the route to other schools runs through progression, so it is not instant.
The short answer
For most beginners, the right class is the one whose core activity you already enjoy. Dune: Awakening presents its schools as mix-and-match paths rather than rigid career lock-ins, so the decision is about where you want to start, not which class is strongest. Official game-site material describes the schools as a set of options you can combine, and trainers provide a way to learn abilities from other schools.
The five schools side by side
The table below uses broad role labels from a June 2025 class guide. They describe what each school is built around, not how it performs in the current game.
| School | Core identity | Combat distance | Best fit for a player who wants to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swordmaster | Close-quarters aggression and melee defense | Melee | Engage enemies directly and stay in the fight |
| Bene Gesserit | Physical mastery and manipulation, with powers that affect enemy behavior | Not stated in the guide | Use control-oriented powers and movement |
| Mentat | Reconnaissance, strategy, stealth, and planning | Ranged planning and stealth | Prepare, gather tactical information, and pick fights carefully |
| Trooper | Firearms, offense, and demolition | Ranged firearms | Follow a straightforward soldier-style combat loop |
| Planetologist | Gathering and exploration | Not stated in the guide | Prioritize resources and PvE exploration |

#1 Best Overall
- Boxed Game
- Do you want to be in the middle of every fight? Start with the Swordmaster. It suits players who like direct, close-range pressure and defensive melee play.
- Do you prefer to shape encounters rather than simply win them? The Bene Gesserit fits players who enjoy powers that change how enemies behave and who like controlling movement.
- Do you like scouting, planning, and choosing when to engage? The Mentat suits players who want reconnaissance, stealth, and tactical information before committing.
- Do you want firearms and a clear offensive loop? The Trooper is the most straightforward option for players who want guns, offense, and demolition.
- Is resource gathering and exploration your main interest? The Planetologist is built around gathering and exploring the world, which suits players who prioritize PvE exploration.
If you are unsure how you play, pick the school whose description sounds most like the first hour you want to have, not the one that sounds most powerful on paper.
Changing schools later: trainers and progression
Your starting school does not lock you out of the others. PC Gamer’s June 2025 trainer guide states that players can learn specializations from other schools through trainers, and the official class overview frames the schools as paths you can mix. The limit is progression: abilities from other trees are earned by advancing through the game, so you should not expect every ability from a second school to be available immediately. Plan a first school that gives you a playable core, then branch out as your character develops.

What this guide can and cannot tell you
The class descriptions above come from a June 2025 guide, and the trainer information comes from a June 2025 guide update. Class abilities, trainer locations, unlock conditions, and relative strength can all change with patches. Because of that, this article does not rank the schools for current balance, and it does not name a single strongest beginner class. Check the in-game class and trainer screens, and any patch notes for the version you are playing, before treating any one school as the best choice.
The Bene Gesserit and Planetologist combat distances are not stated in the guide, so judge those two by trying their starting abilities in play.
