Its scale came from procedural generation, not hand-built design, so the title describes how much terrain the game contains rather than how much authored content a player will find. Arena also claims a vast world, but its figure is a different kind of measurement and should not be ranked against Daggerfall’s.
Why Daggerfall holds the fixed-size record
Guinness World Records lists Daggerfall’s randomly generated map at 188,000 square miles. The record listing gives a record date of 31 August 1996, which matches the game’s release period. Because the map is a fixed size and the figure comes from a recognised record-keeping body, it is the most defensible answer to “which Elder Scrolls has the biggest map.”
How procedural generation created the scale
Daggerfall did not ship with a continent drawn by hand. Its terrain was generated by the game, which allowed the designers to cover far more ground than hand-sculpting would have permitted at the time. A scholarly article on the game describes its virtual space as over 160,000 square kilometres and discusses the long empty stretches between points of interest that this design approach produces.
The same article’s footnote cites a fan measurement of 314 by 530 kilometres. Multiplied, those dimensions come to roughly 166,000 square kilometres, which sits close to the 160,000 figure in the body text. The Guinness figure of 188,000 square miles is about 487,000 square kilometres, far larger than either. The sources do not explain the gap, so treat the Guinness number as a record-listing claim and the kilometre figures as independent estimates that agree with each other more closely than with it.

What “largest” does not mean
A large generated map is not the same as a large amount of hand-built content. Daggerfall’s size is real, but much of it is procedural space between locations. Readers who want the most authored, dense world should look at the measures in the next sections, not the area record alone.
Arena: all nine provinces, a different kind of number
Arena is the usual alternative answer. A 2014 TIME interview says the game offered access to all nine provinces of Tamriel and reports over two million square miles of explorable turf. The same article notes that most of that terrain was randomly generated and that much of it was forgettable.

- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Official Game Guide
That is an attributed claim about explorable turf, not a standardised fixed-map measurement. Arena’s figure also measures a different thing from Daggerfall’s: it describes what the game offers across its whole setting, while Guinness reports the extent of one fixed generated map. Put side by side, the two numbers look like a ranking, but they are not measured on the same basis, so they should not be ranked against each other.
Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind
The most common comparison in the series is Skyrim against Oblivion. In a 2011 interview with Fast Company, Skyrim game director Todd Howard addressed this directly:

Rank #3
“If you look at the actual land mass, it’s about the size of Oblivion, which is quite a bit larger than Morrowind.”
In the same interview he added: “But there is significantly more content in Skyrim.”
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
So the developer’s own comparison is qualitative: Skyrim’s land mass is roughly Oblivion’s size and noticeably larger than Morrowind’s, and Skyrim has more content. Neither a square-kilometre figure nor a claim that Skyrim is bigger than Oblivion appears in that statement. Readers who want a single-number ranking of Oblivion and Morrowind will not find one in the sources available.
Map area is not content density
Area and density answer different questions. Daggerfall covers the most fixed ground. Later games in the series reduced surface area while placing more frequent narrative and gameplay interactions into the space they had, so a smaller map can feel busier, more authored and more engaging. Judging a game only by the size of its map misses that trade-off.

Why there is no complete ranking
The sources do not provide consistent, authoritative playable-area figures for every installment, so a ranked table of all games would require numbers that are not established. When comparing maps yourself, state which measure you are using:
- Fixed-size generated extent (Daggerfall’s record) versus a reported explorable-terrain claim (Arena’s TIME figure).
- Procedural terrain versus hand-sculpted, authored space.
- Total geographic area versus density of quests, locations and encounters.
- One province-sized setting versus access to several provinces or a continent-spanning world.
Under those definitions, Daggerfall is the answer for the largest fixed-size map, Arena is the answer for the widest reported setting, and Skyrim is the answer for the best-known modern comparison, with the caveat that its land area is described only in relation to Oblivion and Morrowind.
