There is no universally best party member in Metaphor: ReFantazio. The better choice depends on the enemy, the role your lineup needs, and which Archetypes and Synthesis skills you have unlocked. For practical recommendations, build around a job to fill: use a Knight for protection, Mage for elemental coverage, or pair a Masked Dancer with a Summoner to set up elemental damage.
How to choose the best party members
Character identity matters, but Archetypes shape combat roles and determine which Synthesis abilities are available. ATLUS/SEGA describes the game as letting players “shape your party to your liking,” and GameSpot’s team-composition guide likewise recommends adjusting Archetypes and pairing them to suit Synthesis skills. Before settling on a lineup, consider these factors:
- Role: Do you need protection, physical or magical damage, healing, or broader coverage?
- Enemy matchup: Can your attacks exploit the enemy’s weakness without running into resistances or wasting turns?
- Archetype access: Have you unlocked the relevant Follower Bond and mastered any required earlier Archetypes?
- Synthesis: Do your active Archetypes provide the combination needed for the skill you want?
- Progress: Is the recommendation available at your point in the story? Some options, including Royal Archetypes, are late-game and character-specific.
GameSpot notes that party members can be moved among Archetypes fairly freely, although advanced Archetypes have requirements; its guide also points to tailoring choices to enemy weaknesses in some side dungeons. Strong party choices by role
For defense: Knight
Knight is a strong choice when your team needs a durable protector. GameSpot describes the Archetype as able to draw enemy attention and shield more fragile back-row damage dealers. Hulkenberg is associated with Knight in ATLUS/SEGA’s character material, but the recommendation is about the Archetype’s job in the lineup—not a claim that Hulkenberg must always stay in that role. For elemental coverage: Mage
The Mage line gives access to fire, ice, and electric attacks, making it useful when you need options against different weaknesses. GameSpot describes all-enemy Synthesis versions available from Mage combinations with Seeker, Healer, or another Mage. In the cited setup, Healer adds an all-enemy light attack to that coverage. For elemental setup and follow-through: Masked Dancer plus Summoner
GameSpot highlights Masked Dancer and Summoner as a powerful pairing: Masked Dancer can inflict a one-time elemental weakness, then Summoner can exploit it with a broad range of elemental attacks. Which characters count as party members?
ATLUS/SEGA’s character pages identify the protagonist, Strohl, Hulkenberg, and Heismay, and its Nintendo Switch 2 character page also lists Junah and Eupha. Gallica travels with the group as a guide, but her official profile says she is too small to participate in battles, so she should not be ranked as a combat party member. Why a fixed character tier list is misleading
The available guidance supports recommendations by role and Archetype combination, not a definitive ranking of every character across every chapter, difficulty, and endgame fight. Archetypes can change, enemy weaknesses vary, and Synthesis depends on the Archetypes brought together. Royal Archetypes arrive late and are unique to individual characters, so their availability also depends on progression. GameSpot Push Square
